So here's the scoop... About a half dozen college friends of mine try to get together each summer for a short get away. They enjoy the concept of fishing, but most aren't really fishermen. So we're really talking bait fishing and trolling for the most part. fly-fishing or even what most on this board would consider normal every day lure fishing is frustrating for about 2/3 of this group.

To date we've fished off the coast of North Carolina, trout in the White River, Stripers on Texoma, Snook in Naples, FL, Blue cats in South Carolina, and salmon/lake trout in Lake Michigan.

...in recent years we've tried to incorporate 1 "other" event into the long weekend. A&M vs. South Carolina football, Cubs game at Wrigley, etc. About half the group has started to suggest a little golf while we're at it.

Soooo OB, if you had a 3 day weekend, 1 day golf, 1 day fishing (with the caveats above), and figure a half day travel in/half day travel out, what would be your Top 2-3 suggestions? I have some ideas and am working on more but I'm sure there are some I'm missing and I'm hoping you can help me fill in the gaps.

Probably looking at June-August time frame but that's semi-negotiable.

Good golf courses, good fishing... Maui.

But closer for you would be the NW Arkansas, SW Missouri, Branson area.

Myrtle Beach? Great golf, pier, surf and deep sea fishing. Although it will be hotter than f*** that time of year.

Pelican Bay is closer to LA, might free up more time.

Hot Springs AR - horse betting, striper fishing, golf . My old man caught a 34 lb striper that's on my wall out of Oauchita.

Stay at the Arlington

Although if you've fished the White you may have already had your fill of Arkansas

Edit: think most of the striper fishing is shad under a balloon or downrigging so pretty simple

Noodling.

Oklahoma or another big catfish area. Would make for an epic man trip and everyone will be on the same skill level.

I'd say Charleston over Myrtle if they go back to Sakerlina. The golf may not be as good but the city has a much better vibe.

Coeur d'Alene Resort Golf Course. They have a floating green. There has to be fish nearby. I would imagine Idaho weather would be nice during your window.

You wanna golf and fish you say?

Kiawah, South Carolina

Golf the ocean course. Get a guide for offshore out of Bohicket Marina, or a marsh/skinny water guide out of Kiawah or Charleston.

Rent a house in Kiawah on VRBO.

If you have money left, dine in Charleston at any of the mighty fine southern establishments.

Cheaper version would be casino room + golf + fishing in Lake Charles. Book Jared Adams for big speckled trout.

That's my regular run. Golf at the casino courses or Gray Plantation. Fishing hackberry and catching limits on reds and trouts. Topped off by a night at the tables and a steak at Vic & Anthony.

I'd say go to Louisiana. Lake Charles or New Orleans. You can shrimp soak for just about anything in the bay. Ask the guys over on the golf forum where to play. There's already a LC golf rec topic too.

Ps. How have these people fished all these places and still struggle with everyday lure fishing!?!?!??

I highly recommend this option, but Jared is no longer guiding, he is taking a year off to try and win the STAR tournament this summer. Hackberry Rod and Gun is a nice option if you have novice fishermen. The Golden Nugget is damn nice, good food, drink, scenery, and a great pool.

Sean,
my group does almost the exact same thing...going on 15 years now...but much more golf focused....we've been from sea to shining sea!!

Out of the 14 places we've gone...I'd start with these 2...

1) Park City, UT....cheap golf!!! But that golf courses are awesome!! Soldiers Hollow would be the perfect place to golf. We also did guided fly fishing....for some of us fisherman the guides really worked with us to our skill level....and for the ones who never fished they had basic setup and they coached them into catching as well. I can get guide contact info if you want it. Plus, easy to fly to Salt Lake and PC is a 45 minute drive. Ample restaurants and bars. Golf and fishing within 20 minutes.

2) Charleston/Sullivans Island/Isle of Palms.....Charleston is a clean New Orleans....we did golf and fishing while staying on SUllivans Island/Isle of Palms....obviously redfish and trout. Golf isn't necessarily cheap there though.

If you wanted a third option, I'd say Biloxi....casinos, reds/trout, and courses like the golden bear are really good.

Also, regarding Pebble...it's a phenominal place obviously...but maybe the poster didn't realize a few things...Ags play UCLA in los angeles...Pebble ain't anywhere close to that. AAAND you have to stay on property in order to play Pebble....which as you'd expect ain't cheap.

and one more thing regarding Kiawah....great course...but you're gonna pay about $350-$400 to play there. Not sure how much your guys want to spend on golf but that's definitely up there. I can tell you that just this past week at TPC Sawgrass it was $425 to play and right after the tournament it's $550 for some reference.

I appreciate the ideas, guys. Loving them so far. As you might expect, some are less excited about golf, some less excited about the fishing, so I'm trying to find the sweet spot for each. There's some great options here. Keep em coming!

We do the same thing but one of our rules is no golf. One of the coolest things we have done is rented a giant houseboat on Lake
Amistad. We loaded it up with food/beer and towed a 21 ft skiff behind it. Blast. Arizona has some as well. Worth a look.

Brandon Dunes in Brandon, Oregon for the golf. You're like 2 hours from the umpqua and of course are on the coast.

Bandon Dunes is awesome but probably above the skill level of all but 2 of us, and that is if you are very generous and include me in the two.

I'd really like to focus on the fishing, and I'm certain I can find a suitable golf course nearby. Pebble, Bandon, Kiawah are going to be way too much course for our hackers that just want to drink and swing a club 100 times.

What kind of fishing do you want to do?
Coastal, river, lake, pond
Bank, kayak, boat

I would say Austin
Tons of good courses, lots of variety.
Kayak fish town lake, boat fish travis or drive out to Buchanan or swing down to the Guadalupe for some fly fishing.

The budget and flight time may be more than what you are looking at... But tuna fishing in PEI would be awesome for a late summer trip. Plenty of golf up there too.

Tuna out of Venice and then golf and a night on the town in Nawlins would be fun too.

There's golf in Marathon key Florida too. Extremely diverse fishing, offshore for blackfin and mahi, tons of inshore opportunities, easy going snapper fishing chuming on the reefs. We rented a house for a group down there last summer and it was really affordable. Plenty of breweries to visit just up the road in Islamorada, or down in Key West.

Sean- apologies for the derail but was looking to get in touch offline about planning a waterfowl trip to Kansas this upcoming season.

Do you have an email I can reach you at or if you don't want to post perhaps someone on here could PM me your contact info.

Thanks

I will say Bandon is a challenge but pretty damn fun even for a hacker(like me) Pacific and Old Macdonald are real beotches but Bandon is set up to play with the prevailing wind and is wide open but it can still be a chore.

Third vote for lake Charles. Stay at L'Auberge or Nugget and gamble day 1 with golf right there at the casino. Day 2 at gross savanne lodge for private, guided fishing for trout, reds, flounder followed by dinner and relaxing that night at the lodge.
