So I've been really wanting to build a custom rifle for hunting. while there's a good chance I'll get to travel to Alaska and Africa to hunt someday having a dangerous game rifle doesn't appeal to me now. I'll just have a 375 h&h when or if the situation presents itself. And I'm fine with taking the 308 elk hunting if need be. And the 308 ability on deer/black bear is obvious?
Here is my conundrum. When ingot out of high school in 90 my old man bought me a cheap savage 110e in 308. It has a $75 bushnell 4x12 from Walmart on it. I consistently shoot around 3/4" moa at 100 yards. Every deer I've ever shot at with it died nearly instantly like it was hit by a frikkin death ray. So I was thinking about building a 338 federal or 358 Winchester. But I want to shoot it a lot and 308 ammo is so much cheaper than nearly anything especially those. Then I looked into a 6.5 of some sort but they're barely ahead of .308 for any kind of target shooting I'm likely and will do. So then I thought about building a 308 custom rifle but indoor honestly know if a custom would shoot any better than the one I already have. I also own a 243 and a 45-70 so I have those ranges covered.
So if I already own a rifle that performs perfectly how can I improve on it? Yeah I know, first world problems.
Y'all have any thoughts?
