The teal must have figured out that it's almost season. Where we had no birds at all just a few days ago, now there are hundreds of teal. It's so cool how they just seem to show up overnight.

If you're down state and waiting for teal, I can confirm that they are on the move.

We saw a couple of groups near Point Comfort last weekend, but I was hoping this front would be bringing the rest... can't wait.

Yes! Speaking of which I procured one of the corp of engineer spots out at Lake Somerville. Tonight I get to go pick my spot out of 40 spots can anyone tell me what the best area is on Lake Somerville?

I haven't done any scouting this year, anyone seen any teal in the DFW area? No specific lakes please.

I'm going out Saturday blind, my spot from last year is under water

Made my morning. Had a flock of probably 30 blow over the road on my way to work.. This is in S Blanco county. I don't know that they stay anywhere very close to here. May have been on the way to Canyon Lake for a stop. The way they were moving they'd have been there in 7-8 more minutes. Rice rockets are FAST

In DFW I've seen a few looking tomorrow for some more.

Been seeing teal in the Permian Basin over the last week or so, lots coming off frac ponds when I am on lease roads. Very ready for Saturday, smackin teal in the morning and dove in the evening. South Eastern Tom Green Co.

Have they moved the blind spots? There was one the TAMU DU club used to get that always produced something maybe #27? It was in a narrow cove near 416 but west of the island and east of the creek draw... basically directly across from Apache Hills boat launch... but Neuman's Bottom and flag pond were always the honey holes.

I hope this front does the trick. Haven't seen many on our properties near the coast.

Blind by deer island was really good the year I drew it. You will need a boat to get to it though.

2nd DUMAN's post, oh and the launch in Apache Hills is public regardless of what the signs say.

26 is closed this year due to peppering neighboring TPW land hunters. True or not the corp said they didn't know, but closed it anyway.

We will see how our blind is. No one on the right side (north of us) so hopefully that helps.

Human you must have hunted blind 27. I looked at that when as it was available when is was my pick, however, all the turds there said that it wasn't a good choice. (fyi they chose before me and didn't choose it so they weren't trying to keep me from it. The rangers pretty much said there are some GREAT spots which are all gone, and the rest can have good and bad groups.

Planned on doing my research tonight, but is there any public land to hunt on Somerville for Teal season?

Newmann's (need a boat) and Flag pond (used to be required to have a boat as foot access was illegal). you can also get on the nails creek WMA and Yegua Creek WMA, a few ponds in the right places have teal and big ducks later.

Have to have you public lands permit though.

Flag Pond is by far best place to be at Somerville. May be accessible with the amount of rain this year. I know in years past, it was not huntable because of low lake levels.

I'll add in that while a boat was required to get up the creek to access Flag Pond, no one I know of was ever ticketed for dragging their boat up the drier portions of the creek. However, I saw someone ticketed for hunting out there that didn't have a boat, GW had watched them jump a private property fence apparently (story I heard).

Don't remember the numbers but we got one of the best spots last year with over 900 applicants and never saw more than a couple birds. 95% of those spots are pure junk set up to appease the masses. Ended up killing about 400 birds on another piece of local water away from the yahoos. Didn't even apply for somerville this year.

Did they say how many applicants put in?

there was all kinds of stuff mixed in (big ducks, various shore birds, herons), but the really large groups were teal.

Nice.

What part of the state are you in? Unfortunately due to work & family obligations I don't know if I'm gonna have a chance to get after the teal.

Good news... Teal prospects could improve out of blue

Better news, I've got my schedule cleared for Monday and get to hunt an extra day.

Teal opener is the one waterfowl day of the year that I plan on hunting year in and year out because our dove are all shot out and deer hasn't started yet. We have very few birds right now because our summer residents moved out 2 weeks ago and are chillin' on canyon77s playas and the northern ducks are still in Nebraska. Hopefully we get some good bird movement tomorrow with the storms rolling through tonight.

New to early teal season hunting and still have a lot to learn about duck hunting in general. Located in North Texas and wondering if these early teal land on small water (creeks and ponds) or mainly just the larger lakes as they move south?
Lt. Joe Bookman

They definitely like small water, as long as there is food. Most of the time you see them in water <12" deep with vegetation mixed in.
