How long do you want to ignore this user?
Looking for around a 100hp (85 pto) tractor. Need bucket, shredder, haying, etc.

I have both JD and Kubota dealers near me (Navasota area) as well as NH and few others I think. Any opinions on JD E series? Kubota?

Was thinking JD5100E but I've gotten mixed messages about reliability. I like some of the options of the M series. Haven't researched Kubota yet but people I know that have them swear by them (but they have smaller tractors in range of 25-30 hp).

I usually buy new and take care of equipment but could go used if good tractor found. Full disclosure I'm a newbie to tractors.

We just got a Kubota 8560M its only 76 hp at the pto so a little less than what you are looking at, but we have no complaints so far. It is a little light on the front with the big brush hog on the back so we need to fill the tires or add weights.

I am thinking the odds of getting a "hands-on" reply are pretty slim for a recent model that large.

I own a large and a small John Deere but they are both old. Have always heard good things about both JD and Kubota. Not knowing anything more than that, I would go with whichever dealer you think will service you better if all other things are equal.

Family recently bought a JD 5065E and we've been very pleased with it so far. It pulls the 12 foot bat wing shredder no problem.

I guess I should have clarified a little, pto power for running the shredder is no issue, its just the rhino 472 weighs 2700ish lbs. I have cut up to the 4-4.5" tree that it is rated for, man it jumps a little when you hit that.

Thanks for responses to far. I'm going to research Kubota also as I've heard you can get a comparable tractor to a JD for less due to the yellow/green paint premium.

You have a New Holland dealer near you as well, if that matters.

There's an Aggie, Rick Pryor '76, over by Madisonville who does tractor repair.

If you want someone who really knows tractors, you might ask him the pros and cons of each. Or if you need some work on a tractor.

I found this address and telephone number for him with Google:

I bought a 75 H.P. New Holland from Washing County Tractor and have had it serviced several times by the Navasota location. I have been very disappointed with the quality of the tractor but the service at the dealership has been great. I have always heard if you buy green and use it for thirty years and take care of it you can sell it for more than you paid for it. I only wish I would have listened to what my friends told me when I was buying Blue.

I have a couple of Kubota a that are great. One M series and one L series. Not quite the size you are looking at. The Kubota engines are really good IMO. I'm sure both Kubota and John Deere would work just fine.

I sell John Deere in west Texas. Both tractors would be great for your needs. The 5100M will offer a better cab, better hydraulics, and other features that aren't available on the E series. The 5100M can also be equipped with AutoTrak, which you may not need, but that gives another level of second market buyers to help the resale value. The 5100E is a very solid tractor, but will be a more "bare bones" model and the price will relate that. As far as value goes, the resale on the JD's will be significantly higher than the Kubota. Contact me if you have any questions jd at southplainsimplement dot com or 4thirtytwo 213-seventy5thirty3.

Dependent on your budget, for "X" $$$ I always recommend 4WD over horsepower....unless you can afford both.
Especially with a FEL or any sort of dirt work.

You mentioned the likely tasks...100 HP is a pretty big tractor for general tasks, unless mowing large acreage and pulling a large shredder. Most hay work can get by on less HP (or you tag team with another tractor).

Kubota will almost always get you more for your $$ invested, but like many others, my experience has been in the 60HP and under category. Kubota's are a little less economical on their diesel usage, vs an equivalent JD.

The Rhino 472 indeed looks like a bad-azz shredder, but their spec sheet indicates 1560 lbs...a lot for a 6 ft shredder!

Dealer told use 2000 something, which might be right, you get it bouncing you can feel the front tires getting light, and that's with a loader on the front.

Its 1/4" plate plus everywhere, which is nice cause you can actually push some decent sized yupon and such over without bending the crap outta it. even the side plating and deck plating are at least 1/4" if i remember correctly.

The majority of our property is wooded, so we are working on reclaiming it for a couple of fields as well as the roads and such. Thats why we needed the smaller diameter but high cutting capacity. the next one up is not able to be put on the 3-pt hitch so thats the only bad news, cutting width is about a ft or so narrower than the tractor.

We have had everything new and used. Loader on Kubota is similar to the Bobcat and is strong, but pain in the ass. JD has a better system. Used is the way to go. Get bigger than you think you need in terms of HP and all wheel drive is nice. Consider a M series over an E series. We use the E series at work and are now trading those for Ms.

Having said that about going bigger most of our hay, shredding and spraying work is done with a Ford 4000 and a 55 hp JD. We use large tractors for tillage. No cab tractors are superior for road and ditch work and for spraying (you can use a wand). Cabs are awesome for shredding. When we haul hay I pick a no cab tractor everytime, because easier to maneuver on the fly.

More important than any price or deal you will find is the quality of the dealer. That is the easiest way to keep equipment running, more importantly since you are new to tractors. Premium hydraulics is a nice setup to look for.

Ergonomics are better in the JD than Kubota. We bought a Kubota in a foreclosure, good tractor but we will be trading it in for a green one soon because of the cab setup.

If you are considering New Holland you might as well consider Case since they are practically identical tractors.

What's the consensus on mahindra? I have a 26 hp Kubota and it works great for what it is designed for. But I need to go to a 36 to 40 hp range.

I have a Kubota M125X. I believe it is around 105 PTO HP. I love it. My brother in law and his father only use JD equipment. They have close to 3000 acres and raise Hay and run a cattle operation close to Yoakum, TX. My brother in law does a lot of work for me on my much smaller operation since I don't live there, and of course he uses my equipment. He pulls my batwing, my aerator and my discs. Last year, he and his father traded all 3 of their JD tractors for Kubota tractors, two 70 hp tractors and a 125. He loves 'em and says they overpaid for green for years.

I have a 50 hp Mahindra with a cab that I bought 3 years ago. I looked at both JD and Kubota, but felt I got more bang for my buck with Mahindra. I don't think it has as many bells and whistles, but it has been very reliable and has done everything I have asked. If I was going to be making a living with it, I'd probably go JD, but to plant food plots in the fall and spring and keep the place mowed in the summer, the Mahindra has been great.

We have a Kubota M110gx 110 hp. Bucket on front three point hitch on back. We also have a custom built sprayer for the back. We have a gps system installed we use for spraying that is awesome. I can get you the name and specs if you're interested.

Last year we bought a Case IH Farmall 85c from ASCO in Bryan ( same as Newholland T4-85). It has about 350 hours on it and we use it for every thing from baling hay, shredding, spraying, moving dirt, digging sprigs and stacking hay. Have had no problems with it. It does just fine pulling a heavy duty bush hog 2815 shredder. The biggest thing you need to look at is the regeneration systems (DPF) on these new tractors. From my research, JD was having the most problems with theirs. I also disliked the JD cab layout the most. The biggest thing I have noticed with Kubota is the paint seems to fade rather quick. Over all the Case IH has proven to be a great tractor so far.

Hope this helps

I had a small Mahindra that I recently sold. That tractor always seemed to have some kind of problem going on. Maybe it was just that particular tractor and not the brand? Anyways I did get a lot of good work out of it and was always able to keep it going with a little work. I recently sold it to make way for another Kubota that is much bigger. Shredding is not as fun as it used to be and I just want to get it done at this point so I went a little overkill on the new Kubota for shredding 10 acres. All of the new tractors over I think 25 hp will have the diesel particulate filter I believe. My new tractor has not done the regeneration yet but I'd be willing to bet it is not a big deal.

I bought a 100 HP Mahindra back in January and have been happy with it so far. I have been using it hauling round bales, aerating, shredding and spraying. At this time I would recommend a Mahindra.

And whatever you get make sure it is 4-wheel drive...A cab and A/C was a must for me..

Well I went with a kubota 3301. It will be enough for what I need. If anybody has any questioned about it let me know. I get it on Tuesday. It will go to work right off the trailer.

You'll be happy with the new Kubota. I just bought an L4701 for the house and have a M5040 at my ranch. Both get the job done.

Does anyone own a Kioti and have any thoughts on it? I have been looking and I cannot seem to find any negative press/reviews about it anywhere... Paige Tractors is a dealer and they are close and for the money compared to Kubota they are about 10- 12% less..

Thoughts?
