You guys that have built a barndominium, what did it set you back?

How much does the cost vary by location? Like if it is 10 miles from a city vs 150 miles from a city?

Ball park info is fine. The family has some land in the middle of Missouri I am toying with doing something with.

Not to derail, but I'd be interested in cost of a 30 x 40 metal building with slab. Thinking three bays. No plumbing needed. Only electrical.

For a metal building, foundation and erection labor to put the building up, you are looking at around $20 / square foot. The interior finish out will vary, depending on how elaborate you wish to go with it.

My brother is currently building a 40x60 out north of Temple and is doing a lot of the work himself. He's hoping to come in under $50k for the final product.

We are building one West of Houston right now - 1200 sqft of living with 1200 sqft of shop, septic, etc.

What adds up is any options you include - for example we added larger porches and a 12' X 40' lean-to. All in though, we were still considerably less than the estimate on wdmb. With appliances, electrical wiring, HVAC, etc included we are at $62.50/sqft for turn key.

*Full disclosure - we have blueprints/signed contract and start construction in 3 weeks so I don't have any feedback on their actual work from personal experience yet*

I would recommend you call Countrywide Barns & Buildings. They are based out of Tennessee and have been great to work with so far. They will provide you with estimates (that amazingly enough they stuck to when giving the final bid) and discuss any floor plan options, etc. The thing I liked best was the have their own crews and don't subcontract any of it out. PM me if you want more details or the name of who to contact at Country Wide.

I find it interesting that these barndominiums have a higher cost/sq-ft than my new build house did. Is there something i am missing here?

3274 sq-ft house for $187,816. 6 years ago in the housing slump, but still.

That is $57.37/sq-ft

Location and transport costs factor in to barndominium builds, and they're usually semi-custom builds as well. Much cheaper to build in a subdivision in a city than to haul that stuff out to the sticks and down a dirt road!

I just built one that was 3000 ft from the nearest water supply and electricity. I didn't track costs as closely as I should have, but it was custom and modifications were made all throughout the project. I built a 40'x50' with 14' sidewalls and a 6:12 pitch. Half is a high ceiling garage, the other half is a split level finished-out loft. A safe estimate for mine is $65/sqft of living space. It was probably closer to $60. I got the foundation, steel building w/loft, plumbing and septic for $63,600. I had intended to the interior myself. I built the staircase, front porch, and installed the upstairs subflooring but then handed it over to a contractor so I could go hunting on the weekends.

Your final costs will greatly depend on the level of interior finish and how far you are from current water and electric.

I'd be interested in seeing some pictures of these builds, if anyone cares to share. I'm a couple years away from being able to do this myself, but I'd like to get some ideas.

Very nice country! It's cool to see how similar my decision making was to yours this past year. I wish I'd seen this document last June, it could've relieved some of my stress. My wife and I decided to do the same thing with our land (bardo 1st, house 2nd) so that we could move to the country faster and take our time with the future home. I'll try to create a similar document when I get a chance. Thanks for sharing.

Country,

Like your place in Kimble County & can attest to your comment on concrete work out there. What part of the county are you in? I just finished working on a cabin at our place off of Blue Mountain Road between 385 & 479. We took an old 40'x24' school portable building & gutted it. Rocked around the entire outside, built porches on front & back with a new metal roof. Finished out the inside with 2 bedrooms, 1 bathroom, laundry room, & open area for the kitchen/living.

Man.....sorry I've been missing this thread guys. I just didn't see it being bumped and for some reason it wasn't showing in the watchlist.

I completely forgot to take pictures, but will keep that on my to do list.

MechAg--I grew up on a 2000 acre ranch at Segovia--close to where 479 hits I-10. The location of the condominium that I built is at the southern end of the Old Segovia Road which is County Road 450. I grew up all over the area that you are talking about and may have accidentally drove on some of those county roads and drank a beer or two If you're ever in Junction area, let me know. My wife and I have Ags out all the time to watch games on Saturdays in the Fall and we have a big group of Aggies that always has something going on.
