I planted a few burr Oak acorns last winter. 5 of them came up. I'm stoked!

But, each of them has multiple "stems." So my question is what do I do with them? Leave them be? Trim one off at the ground? I want a normal, single trunked tree when my babies grow up.

Snip the smaller ones off. Leave the largest one.

We have massive native Burr oaks all along the riverbottoms here and I've never seen a multi-trunk one. I would leave it alone for now, you can prune it next year when it's dormant.

I guess what I'm saying is it will either correct itself or you can prune it later. Extra eaves are putting roots down now.

Thanks!

Another question. Right now 2 of them are in 1 molasses tubs. I was planning on transplanting 1 out today. Good plan or should I wait until another time of year? I'm worried about the roots getting intertwined.

Doesn't look like Burr Oak leaves.

We have them come up every year in my yard. Most have double stems. Just leave them until they get bigger. And transplanting them usually kills them. Be very careful. I'd keep a lot of soil around them when doing it.

Great... They're in a really sandy soil right now. I'm afraid it's all going to fall of the roots as soon as I try to move them out.

Leaves are HUGE on seedlings and fatter than a mature tree. Seems like the older the tree, the smaller the leaves.

Never plant one next to the house. I've had massive limbs fall out of the old trees in the river bottom. Like, the size of a normal, mature oak tree but falling from 30' in the air kind of massive destruction.
