My girlfriend and I took our kayaks out on the bayou yesterday afternoon to try to catch some cats. I wasn't really sure what to expect, but we wound up having a great time. The channel cats were devouring frozen shrimp. Some of the bigger ones were a lot of fun on light tackle, especially the ones caught in current. I was really shocked at how fast the bayou was flowing...I guess it doesn't really dry up because it's mostly treated sewer discharge. We launched at a neighborhood park near San Felipe and Voss.

We caught some good sized fish...


And some a little bit smaller...

We finished with 12 catfish in under 3 hours. Some of the areas down there genuinely look like a jungle. I doubt there's much fishing pressure. It really is a hidden gem right in the middle of the city.

And don't worry, I berated my girlfriend for holding that fish away from her body to make it look bigger.

If I were you, I wouldn't eat anything coming out of that Bayou. With the chemical dumping and raw sewage that has been dumped there in the past, I especially wouldn't eat the catfish.

If you doubt what I say, travel on down toward the loop through Memorial City and check out the sewer lines dumping straight into the water and a few storm lines dumping chemicals.

I've seen it first hand.

We absolutely did not keep anything.

However, treated sewage is actually pretty clean, usually cleaner than normal lake or river water. Storm drains, on the other hand, carry the dangerous stuff.

I'm glad the bayou is cleaner than it was 30 years ago, but it will never be a good place to catch dinner.

What I witnessed was not treated sewage. As a matter of fact, when I went back down to the Bayou, during work, I took some 6" PVC caps and Cement and closed off a few of them.

I always wondered what happened inside some of those million dollar homes.

Are you really holding a tiny catfish with a pair of lip pliers?

Ah, I misread your post. I'm glad you sealed some of them. I'd imagine the EPA wouldn't be too happy to see raw sludge going into the bayou.

BCOBQ, it's easier to unhook and release them unharmed with a boga grip. If we were fishing cleaner water and keeping the fish, I wouldn't have used it.

Raw sewage is not normally dumped into Buffalo Bayou. However..............sometimes when the treatment plants have been off line or accidents have occured, raw sewage has been dumped in good quantities.

I wouldn't call that "beer".

Geez everbody criticizing him for everything from where he is fishin, to how he is holding a fish, to the beer he is drinking.

If you like fishing there and are doing it legally more power to you. Looks like a good time.

Unless those homes were reported and corrected, you should take a boat trip from Sam Houston Toll Way to Loop 610 and you will see what I was witness to.

why fish for catfish, when you can fish for bass?

Are there many bass in the bayou?

I'm most familiar with bass fishing, I just went for cats because I thought it would be easy and fun.

Saw some people fishing the bayou today by the beltway. They caught some channel catfish like the picture. Anyone else have a similar experience.
