I've read Crichton since I was 10. Favorite author.

Andy Weir is a good sci fi author
Mickey 7 was a good read

Not SciFi but I've been enjoying Vince Flynn's Mitch Rapp series.

Have you read Chrichton's last book Micro?

Seminal work: Neil Stephenson's Snow Crash.

Fun romps: Michael Anderle's Kurtherian Gambit series and Jaxon Reed's Pirates of the Milky Way series. Those two are more space opera but make heavy use of tech.

Blake Crouch has been exciting. Him and Andy Weir have been "can't put down" and of the "plausible" sci-fi type. Both of which are Crichton-esque qualities in my book.
Recursion and Abandon great reads to start with (they all have been).

That might be my favorite book of all time. The sequel was awesome as well. I wish he would write another to make it a trilogy. Such an amazing story.

William F. Forstchen - One Second After and the sequels.

Rollins has a lot of interesting story lines & plots but can't hold a candle to Crichton. He doesn't develop his characters and it's always a 2-3 star book at best

The Passage Trilogy by Justin Cronin
Silo series by Hugh Howey
The Alchemy Wars series by Ian Tregillis
Milkweed series by Ian Tregillis
The Divide series by JS Dewes
Red Rising series by Pierce Brown.

All are quite different and all were hard to put down. The Silo series is really cool.

And I read all the Crichton books years ago and have them at the top of my list.

Passage trilogy was really enjoyable. Cronin is a prof at Rice and incorporated a lot of Texas geography into the books.

Snow Crash was so insanely amazing. Incredible given when it was published. Not sci-fi but speculative tech that realistically was right around the corner compared to over the top sci-fi. Great examples of tribal communities, consumerism gone wild, the breakdown of norms, etc. Brilliant book.

Snow Crash is a brain workout. The book is deep to begin with (technology, violence, action, mystery, heavy biblical and historical references) and then you have reconcile that it was written in 1992 when 95% if the tech in it was pure fiction, but 75% of that is now not only reality, but aging reality.

I'll tell you what- the book I read after Snow Crash was easy, whatever it was.

Ok I'm about 1/3 way through the passage. It's more science-fiction than science fact. Vampires and all.. not a bad book so far but not what I was expecting

I liked the passage, but that second book was super slow, with different characters and I didn't get through it.
The Expanse books should be in here.

The Passage trilogy definitely has a plethora of characters across the different stories - there's a past, present, and future aspect that can get confusing. I will say the payoff is excellent if you can navigate all those.
