I bought this game and am not trying to figure out wtf to do

Find a weapon and secondary combo you like. When you try turf war, gocus on inking as much ground as you can while avoiding being killed. You'll eventually want splat people on the other side, but new players overly focus on death matching and lose a lot.

When you get some coins, buy some gear. The most critical is Ninja squid, which you usually see only on shirts. There are lots of other good ones thay depend on your playstyle: off the top of my head ink resist (move faster in enemy ink), Main saver, increase special gauge build, increase run speed and increase swim speed are all awesome.

When you hit level 10 go play ranked- it makes it less of a free for all.
