Is there a way to find out who owns the rights to a website name?

I'm trying to go one level deeper... Whois.com shows the company that registers the domain - like godaddy, etc.

I want to know who it the "true owner" of the site, not the "registrar" of the site.

Maybe what I'm trying to find is not available.

The hosting company can reach out to the owner on your behalf as the "middle man." Assuming you're looking to buy?

Edit: Adding link.

Used to be the Whois would should a contact name for the "true owner" but I believe you you suppress that info if you elected to do so and no it may just be that way by default.

As mentioned, if you are interested in buying, there is a process to contact owner via registrar for that purpose. A few years ago I purchased a website for about $30k from an old guy in Boston that had the foresight to register 1000s of names in the early 2000 decade.

During discussion we talked about also having variants of your website registered, including things like "mycompany sucks.com" replacing mycompany with name of your company or main website. One of his sites was "webergrillsucks.com". He just had it in storage until he had a gas grill that rusted out. They gave him hell about warranty so he activated website including his story and inviting others to add to it.

He negotiated a nice sell to them, which quite randomly including Weber send him a new grill each year. No idea if story is true, but for a few hundred bucks a year you can cover the negative variations of your webpage and / or common misspellings, etc.

Part of domain registration is the owner contact. Many registrars will offer to hide that information from the public, and will instead provide a proxy email address you can use to contact them. This is a privacy feature, and a good one.

If you're trying to contact the owner, the whois will have a contact email address

It's a lot harder now to find contact information for a domain. Basic whois services only provide the "thin" whois (where the domain is registered) and not necessarily the "thick" whois which contains the contact info. Sometimes the thin whois response will have a link to the registrar website. So if the name is registered at GoDaddy, you can search for GoDaddy whois and perform the lookup on their site.

with the GDPR and other privacy regulations, it's becoming increasingly more difficult to find domain name owners. There are services online that maintain historical data, but they usually require a membership.

I invest in domain names, use them in my software company's business, and have helped friends acquire domain names for their businesses. Feel free to PM me if you need any assistance - no charge and I'm not looking to sell anything

Funny story - I have a client that liquidated their entire business. The documents related to the website sale listed all the domains the company owned. Lots of common misspellings and companysucks.com stuff.

The ones I didn't see coming were the .xxx and porn variants of their various product lines. They had a bunch of asian inspired furniture, so you can imagine what their porn domains were like.
