I realize that Suddenlink is no one's favorite topic, but one of my kids is getting ready to move into an apartment in College Station after being in the dorm their first year. They are going to get Suddenlink internet only, probably going with the 400GB plan.

You can pay an extra $10/month to get their cable modem/router/wifi or supply your own DOSCIS 3.0 modem plus router/wifi. For myself, I'd always supply my own because it will be cheaper in the long run and probably be better quality.

Does anyone have experience using what Suddenlink supplies? I'm trying to weigh if it's still worth it to go ahead and buy our own for a house full of college students vs the simplicity of paying the extra $10/month.

Any opinions or experience with Suddenlink's equipment?

Thanks!

I've got their 1G pipe coming in with my own DOCSIS 3.0 modem and eero router (three node mesh) set up

I have their 1gig and use my own equipment. I've really had zero problems with their speed and reliability, I just don't trust their equipment to last and then to receive a quick replacement when needed. I just prefer to use my own and replace with whatever I want as needed.

Go ahead and invest in your own modem. I went with the Netgear CM1100 which is 150 at costco. It's multigig and future proof.

Get your own, and you don't need to spend that much. You can get a surfboard or equivalent 3.0 modem for ~$70 and it'll be better than Suddenlink's.

The real question is when you say 400gb plan are you saying 400 gb cap or do you mean 400 Mbps speed? A house of college kids will blow through 400gb in less than a month (I did). 400 Mbps is probably plenty fast though.

And good point Chrundle....I meant 400 mbps top speed.
