I'm designing a website for my business and am looking for ideas. A google search yielded some good hits, but I thought solicit other opinions as well. What are your favorite sites or features on sites?

What industry is your business in? Favorite features will almost certainly be industry specific. Are you looking for favorite features from a business perspective or a consumer perspective?

A website that is responsive, easy to navigate, loads quickly, and provides an overall good user experience is a good place to start and is far more important than it being "beautiful" in my opinion.

If you are going to be doing any sort of marketing you will want landing pages specific to the content you are marketing. Don't overload visitors with irrelevant information or fluff.

Setting up your website for SEO success is also important. Relevant content, site speed, responsiveness etc. all play a part in that though, so if you are doing those things well you are already of to a good start.

Probably the most times I've said wow while looking at pictures and reading single sentences since I was 3 years old.

It's asset management, so there's no e-commerce element & I won't be actively marketing, so SEO is not particularly a concern. Just want something that looks and feels professional with more polish than my current managed wordpress design offers.

On the point of loading quickly, does that have more to do with streamlined html/css or hosting?

Loading quickly will typically be more about image optimization (i.e. don't load a 30MB image into a 500x500px section of your page, not bloating your JS (don't include massive libraries that do very little, basic things for your needs) and things like minification of assets (along with things like a CDN which can help if folks are using this from all over the place). There are also techniques that allow the page to load content after the initial page is loaded which can give the feel of the website being faster, by making it "usable" earlier (rather than waiting for everything to finish loading)

As long as you have a solid host, odds are you will be fine on that front.

Content.

Most small business sites suffer from awful information architecture and don't think about things from their users perspective. What is your user going to be looking for? Are they informed about your industry or are they needing introductory info? What pieces of info are relevant to most of your site visitors? Put that information as up front as possible, making it easy for them find and access.

Visually, think about your demographic. Chances are a "beautiful" site (unfortunately) won't mean much to them, and most corporate sites these days are built on a pretty typical Bootstrap type grid anyway. But look at the sites your users are familiar with and pick up some ideas from there on how they present their information.

This CANNOT be said loudly enough.

Think about what your CUSTOMERS want to see on your website and make it beyond stupidly easy for them to get there. A website that is pure text that a customer can navigate is infinitely better than a pretty site that gives them no information.

And when you start adding images, color, fonts, etc - keep in mind that those things have a single purpose: To help a customer find the information mentioned above.

If it doesn't help the customer, it is hurting you and making your website worse.
