For anyone that still has Directv, have they been a lot more stingy with the discounts they offer? I received the loyalty discount last January that just rolled off so I'm trying to get the price down again. I have the middle of the road Choice package not under contract with only 2 tvs and the bill is now ~$75 a month (would be $100, but I have the $25 at&t unlimited discount). I've tried calling both the loyalty and customer retention departments with no luck. Any insight would be helpful.

I would cut the cord and go to Youtube TV for $40 a month, but our internet provides mediocre speeds at best and not reliable.

I was able to cancel via a chat window... I'm convinced they're trying to get people off traditional Direct TV.

It's frustrating. They said I couldn't get a better price even if i cancelled and came in as a new customer. I can cancel anytime without fees since I'm not on contract, but unsure that my 25mb internet speed is enough for streaming. Hulu Live looks really good since it has HGTV and other channels for the wife

Just use your DirecTV login to try steaming things like the Watch ESPN app. You can steam on your computer or iPad if you don't have a way to try it on your TV. You can know right now if your internet connection is up to it.

Sad to hear that. I need to call and haggle again soon.

So glad I ditched them and have Youtube TV. No contact and no hassle and only $40 a month.

If only I could do about my Suddenlink internet. Service is fine 98% of the time but I pay over $90 a month for service.

Maybe. I don't really remember at this point. If I did, it was brief and half assed. Spoke with someone in retentions. Turned down their first offer. Went with the second. Price guaranteed for a year. No contract. I was on the phone maybe 15 minutes. Not bad.

You can test Hulu Live for 7 days free so do that and see if your internet holds up. Your speed should be ok based on the requirements they list (5mb I believe). Regardless, test it and see what happens.

If it works then you can kill DTV altogether which it was I hope to do. I signed up yesterday for the 7 day trial and within about 10 minutes of playing around with it I think I'm already convinced I'll drop DTV. I'm loving the interface. I combined it with a Roku streaming stick on one of my older TV's and also love the Roku remote. I can flip between Netflix and Hulu with dedicated buttons on the Roku remote.

Note on Hulu Live - the full Live app only works on newer TVs specifically Samsung and LG's from 2016 and on which is why I'm using the Roku stick. Otherwise, it's not's really needed with a newer TV.

I've got another google Wifi node to improve coverage so I'll test it out and see. I'll have to grab a Roku stick since my tv isn't a smart tv

We got our best offer about 4 mos ago (12.99/mo for a year) but we actually had to cancel for a few days. Then the primo-retention people called us under the guise of verifying our address to send out the return box for the DVR. We were getting nowhere before actually cancelling.

For all you cancelling DTV, they are a real mess with equipment return. I got a letter saying we can recycle our equipment. Then a letter saying we needed to turn it in or be charge $280, and return boxes will be sent. They never did send us those. Then we got a bill. Since the merger with AT&T, incompetence rules the day.

Proper way to do it is take the equipment to a FedEx or UPS in a box. They scan the equipment and send it off.

Take some of that money being spent on DTV and upgrade your internet speed. YTTV and Hulu offer free trials. Test which one works for you over a Roku. If you want HGTV but like YTTV, look at Philo for $16 a month as a compliment service to YTTV.

Don't look back.

I called last week since my bill went up. I have the Choice package and the guy offered me $70 off per month for a year with little to no hassle.

I've returned both DirecTV and UVerse stuff in the past year and had no problem. I just went to a UPS store with the equipment thrown into a plastic bag and handed it to them. They scanned a bar code on the cable box and gave me a receipt. They didn't want the power cables or remotes, btw.

I know it is not DirecTV but whenever my Uverse goes up in price I call the actual number for cancellations. This is a specific number that is manned by people here in the US and they have always been able to cut me a deal that the regular customer service reps didn't offer. It is a stupid song and dance that you have to do every 6-12 months but it has to happen.

I would imagine DirecTV has a similar customer retention department at a cancellation phone number.

I called DTV to cancel and got sent to a retention specialist. Rather than trying to talk me out of it she recommended direct tv now.

Heismenberg, try Suddenlink again. I also paid $90/month for 200mbps service, called and requested a price break and was told no. A few weeks later, I was researching options in my area and noticed, when I put my neighbors address in the new customer field to check new customer pricing, that 400mbps service was the (formerly 200mbps) tiered standard in my neighborhood. I called Suddenlink back and this time got a super helpful representative that upgraded my grandfathered 200 service to 400 service, then transferred me to retentions to work on price. They wound up dropping my price to $65/month.

As for DirecTV, I couldn't get any price reduction until after I cancelled service. I had used Youtube TVs free trial for a few days and was happy with the service. I called DTV to cancel, rep looked at my account and told me he couldn't drop our price. I was a bit over a year into our 2 year contract and I still had 1 promotion going on my account. He said because of this, he couldn't do anything. A few days after I cancelled and shipped my equipment back, DirecTV called and threw everything they could at me to get me to come back. Their super promotional offer was still double what I pay for Youtube TV. I don't miss DTV at all.

Spectrum (TWC) has a no discount policy after the initial year. Frustrating because TWC was the best at it. If I had another option I'd switch, but no go

I canceled DTV about a year ago. I played the game with the retention guy for about 2 minutes before I just said, "listen, cancel my service". He sighed and had it canceled within about 5 minutes and I was off the phone. I returned the equipment they asked me to (taking photos of the serial numbers, return labels, etc.) and dropped everything off at the UPS store. They didn't ask for a couple of old receivers, so those are in the attic.

I'm now on Roku and PSVue. I'll never return to satellite.

I'd echo the point about checking with your internet provider periodically. I'm in small town central texas and upgraded my service from 100mbps to 200mbps at no additional cost and no long term contract. Take some of the savings in ditching DTV and invest in higher speed internet.

After upgrading my wifi with an Orbi setup, I can stream every device I own simultaneously with no issues at all.

Note: The only mildly annoying thing about streaming for me is that I experience about a 60 second lag compared to others on satellite. So when the Ags score a TD, my best friend sends me a text that precedes the play on my end by about a minute.

I'm waiting for my contract to end in a month or two so I can do this. Switched from U-verse to DirecTV as they offered a ton of incentives (like $300 in gift cards), but the service is pretty awful.

Very ready to be streaming only.

My Direct TV contract was over on 1/13.... I cancelled via chat in about 10 mins. ATT emailed me instructions to return my 4 boxes to a UPS store with my account #. I did that yesterday afternoon and received a confirmation email from ATT this morning. I am free and clear now.

I'm not under contract, so I can be done with them at anytime. The only issue is reliability of my internet. When it works it's plenty of speed for streaming, but there's been a couple times recently where it'll be down for 1-2 days

Wow guess I'm going to have to give ol Suddenlink a call. So you just typed in an address and got new customer pricing and presented that to them?

Yeah, I figured if I knew what they were charging new customers I could use that as leverage. As it turned out, I didn't have to use that information or fight them for a discount on this particular call. I just told the initial rep that I wanted to see if there was anything they could do to lower my price, because I felt as though what I was paying wasn't worth what I was getting. She said no problem and transferred me to the retention dept and they just offered me the new price.

You should try calling again. I had TWC, it was switched to Spectrum. After the first year, I called after my new deal expired and they renewed my 200mbps back to the $45-$49 per month. That 2nd year just expired, and my bill jumped to $69 per month. I called last Friday, asked if I was eligible for any promotional pricing, and they said that I had to wait 3 months after the promo expired and then I would be eligible for the new subscriber rate. I asked them document that on my account (hopefully that's a thing), and will call back after my 3rd payment of the full rate for the promo price they quoted.

I called Suddenlink last night. They gave me the option to lower my price by $10 a month or they could double me speed from 200 to 400 for no additional cost. I chose the speed. We are in the process of selling our current home and buying another. When that happens I will just cancel the internet altogether and when we move have it signed up in my wife's name to get the new customer deal.
