Couple of questions:

I have a couple of things I'd like to blow up into posters, probably 24 x 36.

1) What size images do I need for a good print?
2) Anyone have a reliable online service I can use to get this done?

Minimum resolution for that size would be 5400x3600 pixels.

No experience in actually doing this so can't recommend any sources.

I've printed bigger with less resolution (from an old 12mp 5D), and they are perfectly viewable at about 1.5 ft away.

A place like http://www.nationsphotolab.com/ can handle it.

Are you wanting to print on a glossy poster paper? Because I'd suggest something matte textured otherwise to hide the grain from enlargement.

The prices are probably high and it's not online, but I've had posters printed at Fedex offices.

For scientific conferences, people are going to fabric posters more and more. They're way easier to pack and don't get lost at airport security. My favorite service for that is spoonflower.com.

I had some patent drawings printed poster-size at office depot for just a few bucks. Makes great office or gameroom decoration. I had some Atari and Amiga drawings embiggened.
