I'm going out of town on vacation and might need to access my computer. I've used gotomypc in the past, but is there something better to use? I'll have a laptop, but my work programs and data are on my desktop in my office.

Team viewer is good, but make sure you don't leave the commercial use option check marked while installing. I accidentally did that on one computer and there was no way to undue it. After 30 days, they want $800 to keep going.

I now use VNC viewer on that computer with good results.

You can get team viewer to change your account. You need to send them an email. It takes 2-3 weeks for a response but I've done it before. The info is in their FAQ

I use this for all of my personal computers and my parent's laptops to help with remote tech support.
