Do you mean it's not showing up in your bios, or is bios not coming up at all?

What kind of noises do you hear when it spools up? Tick-tick-tick at regular intervals, nothing at all or something else?

If you have an external hard drive case you could try adding it to a second computer that's already booted and see if you can recover any data.

this, and try the free program "Recuva"...have had good success pulling off a few important files from a crashed hard drive in the past.

In what way was it crashed? I'm interested because I also have an old IDE hard drive that tries to spin up and makes a ticking sound until it finally gives up. The drive is recognized by the BIOS at least.

I think it gave out around 2007, the only reason I care about it at all is that it belonged to a brother who is now deceased. He left behind very little in the way of pictures with him in them. This hard drive probably just has whatever games he was playing installed so it's not professional data recovery worthy, but for the cost of an external HD case it might be worthwhile. Think this thing would even be recognized by the program?

Click of Death. Try the freezer trick. If that doesn't work, it's a lot of money with no guarantee of success.

I had a drive go out a few months ago with the click of death. After a lot of research, it seems you can fix it with replacing the PCB board. Depending on the model and age you can buy a new one and 5 screws and you are done. Worst case you have to send the old board in to clone it onto a new one. It worked like a charm. I used http://www.onepcbsolution.com/index.html

This looks like exactly what I need.

Same here. Going to try it on a recently crashed drive as I'm sure I have a similar drive sitting around that I can harvest from.

I know it doesn't help you now, but in the future and if you're not ready to go all in to the cloud, invest in a RAID 1 NAS and create shares and have your data there. Back that up to another external. That way, nothing of importance is residing on your C drive. HD can crash and you can just pop in a new one and throw your OS and apps on and you're ready to go again.
