So my hard drive just caught on fire!

If I can find a matching hard drive can I just swap out the circuit board to get this one going again?

This is why you shouldn't overclock your hard drive.

I got the black plastic part off, so I think I can just replace that if I can find another one. Then I have to just hope the board isn't borked.

To answer your question, I have swapped circuit boards on hard drives before. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. Good luck.

I looked into doing this once for an external drive that the USB connector was snapped off the board. My googling suggests that you would need the exact same production version of the board from another drive for the greatest chance of success. That is match up the revision numbers on the PCB as well as the controller chips on the boards. Manufacturers may change parts throughout the total production run and it's a pretty good assumption that the revisions are not backwards compatible.

wow is that scary!

you should probably take a sledgehammer to it until it breaks open, then bend/smash all the platters, then bury it somewhere.

Any idea why it happened? I've had a flame shoot out of my power supply as it went out before (way to many things relying on too small of a supply, I think).

Please tell that being less than 1 month from the year 2017, you had everything backed up.

I had the same thing happen to a DVD burner a few years back just out of nowhere. I noticed my study was very dark one day and opened the door to a room filled with black smoke.
