Andre
14 years in the league
1,062 receptions
14,185 yards
70 touchdowns
Led the league in receptions twice
Led the league in yards twice
7 Pro Bowls
2-time All-Pro

Michael
12 years in the league
750 receptions
11,904 yards
65 TD
Never led the league in receptions
Led the league in yards once.
5 Pro Bowls
1-time All-Pro

BUT, 16 career playoff games, 87 receptions, 1,315 yards, 8 TDs.

1992 Super Bowl 6 catches, 114 yards 2 TD
1993 Divisional 9 catches, 126 yards, 1 TD
1994 Divisional 6 catches 111 yards
1994 NFC title game 12 catches 192 yards 2 TD
1995 Divisional 7 catches 100 yards 2 TD
1996 Wild card 8 catches 103 yards

I have a lifelong hatred of the Dallas Cowboys, but those post-season numbers are the reason that Michael Irvin is an all-time elite and Andre Johnson was a really, really good regular season player.

Irvin avg around 5 catches for 82 yards with a TD every other game

Johnson avg around 6 catches for 89 yards with a TD every fourth game

So Irvin gets the nod for playing for an all-time great dynasty, while Johnson is penalized for playing for one of the worst franchises in the game...makes sense.

Irvin also played in a different era and was the unquestioned leader of that dynasty.

Ditka is in the HoF. Will Graham be? not even close.

when you switch RB to Edge, its close. don't think you can say one for sure better than the other.

Revis is every bit as good as Reed was.

It's not total, it's quality across positions. Pitt is better than USC at QB, WR, DT for sure. Which is USC better at? OL & LB?
USC wins DB and RB going away.
RB yes, but not by much.

DB? no way. Revis every bit as good as Lott was.

And USC is out of the picture automatically for not having a HoF at every slot.
_lefraud_

Well let's just do this:

CB: Revis
S: Reed

And it's a wash.

I get Ditka is in the HoF but that position, maybe more so than any other, is the toughest to compare throughout history.

Ditka was all pro twice, Graham only once...but Graham's numbers are so much better. Granted that has to do with the offense of today, but I'd argue Grahams all pro/pro bowls are more impressive than Dtika's

USC has the best list. Their offensive line is incredible.

Your Pitt list needs work. Hugh Green needs to be on there. He was the best college player that I've ever seen.

The thread title literally has "NFL" in the title...and Doleman had the superior NFL career...by a mile.

If we go by depth, than yea, Miami, USC and probably others are better than Pitt. But that's not what this thread is about.

As BMX has pointed out several times, Pitt has a HoF at every single position...USC doesn't.

I disagree with your conclusion totally. Andre is a better player because he worked with so much less.

Irvin played with three other offensive HOF players--Troy Aikman, Emmit Smith, and Larry Allen (four if you count Deion). An argument could be made for Daryl "Moose" Johnston, Jay Novacek, Nate Newton, and Erik Williams (except for that time Reggie White tossed him around like a rag doll) getting into the HOF. And Irvin played with them all for the better part of a decade.

The talent around Andre substantially less, only playing a few years with Schaub, Foster, and a decent O-line. He never had a shot to put up numbers in the playoffs.

but that's not "every position". He gives one spot to OL, even though there are 5 spots on the line. He gives 2 spots to DL because it's a strength for Pitt to mention a DE and a DT. Even just going with a C, a G, and a T would be more fair

Where are kicker and punter and fullback and MLB and free safety and strong safety? it's a very specifically arranged lineup to guarantee Pitt is the best.

So you're going to punish Irvin for being on a better team? Andre didn't get drafted and sign a 15-year contract to stay with the Texans for his 90% of his career. If he wanted to be on a winner, he could have not signed contract extensions or asked for a trade. He could have walked away after his rookie deal expired in 2008, every team in the league would have gone after him. He signed big extensions in 2007 and 2010. At any point he could have made the decision to find a winner.

It wasn't "specifically arranged". NFL game has changed so much where it's hard to differentiate between certain DB & DL over eras. (Not sure what that has to do with USC not aging an HoF QB)

So why no guard, center and tackle? Placekicker? Punter? Returnman?

Ohio State has a long list of quality NFL players...except at the QB position.

QB -
RB - Eddie George, Zeke
WR - Cris Carter, Michael Thomas, Paul Warfield
TE -
OL - Jim Parker, Orlando Pace, Mangold

DL - Jim Marshall, Heyward, Joey Bosa
LB - Gradishar, Spielman
DB - Jack Tatum, Winfield, Jenkins, Lattimore

K - Lou Groza

"except at the QB position". That's crazy, isn't it? I mean, one of the winningest programs of all time, and you struggle to name a decent NFL QB from that school. Maybe Fields will change that.

Von will give A&M a HoF LB. Mike Evans fills a big hole at WR. The rest of the offense is thin. Special teams is strong.

OL - Richmond Webb, Jake

DL - Jacob Green, Childress, Sam Adams, Krueger, Myles
LB - Von, Pardee

Miami?

Not Edgerrin James? Feel like his peak was better than Gore ever achieved, and he sustained it long enough for it to be relevant.

Miami and USC are very close.

Edgerrin James is in the HOF so I'd say he is above Gore.

updates after the latest Hall of Fame class:

Notre Dame added a defensive lineman in Bryant Young.

Colorado added a wide receiver in Cliff Branch.

Southern Cal added an o-lineman in Tony Boselli

and speaking of Florida State...gradually building a nice list...

QB - Winston
RB - Dunn, Cook
WR - Biletnikoff, Boldin
TE -
OL - Walter Jones

DL - Boulware, Dockett
LB - Brooks
DB - Deion, Butler, Ramsey

K - Janikowski

note: Deion and Butler played together in the 1987 & 1988 FSU secondaries --- with 2 Hall of Famers could make a case for greatest college secondary of all-time

going back to Georgia...this list has a chance to get stronger in the next few years. Geno is a HoF lock. And borderline candidates at WR & LB
