They were good at first, but were declining each week. They were headed to below 1mm average. A good tv deal was vital to making 2021 happen and that was not trending in right direction.

Plans for XFL were announced in 2018. At that time, WWE's biggest competition was NXT (both owned by Vince). Vince had a monopoly on pro wrestling to fund his side projects.

AEW launched in early 2019 and has taken over pro wrestling by storm. They're consistently beating WWE in ratings and have caused major shake ups in the WWE.

You don't neglect the golden goose in favor of a side project that can't even have games.

Crowds were getting larger and beer snakes in DC were getting longer each week. Theres definitely room for a Spring league. Hope they come back.

AEW is beating NXT in the ratings but it's still lower compared to Raw or Smackdown. Your last sentence is accurate.
