The Cowboys' Jerry Jones was a leading voice among 17 NFL owners on a conference call Thursday that discussed the possibility of halting commissioner Roger Goodell's pending contract extension, sources involved with the call told ESPN.

There is a growing difference of opinion among owners on Goodell's overall performance as commissioner, according to sources. The owners on Thursday's conference call are generally unhappy with Goodell and the NFL's front office for a variety of reasons, including the player protests staged during the national anthem, the issues regarding the relocation of teams to Los Angeles and the league's handling of the Ray Rice domestic violence case, according to sources.

"You don't get to have this many messes over the years like Roger has had and survive it," said one owner on the call.

How is the NFL commissioner appointed? Is it like a Chancelor or president of the university? Are they nominated, voted? Is it an unending term or what?

The 32 ownership teams (sole owners, majority/minority groups including the public ownership in GB) literally own the league. They hire and fire the Commissioner. He's their collective employee.

Someone who loses as much viewership as Roger has no business being commissioner!

Thanks. So I take it that the owners think he's been doing a good job? That seems kind of strange.

Goodell should have been let go before all this anthem kneeling stuff started. He has not been a strong commissioner of the NFL.

The commissioner has two jobs. Make money for the owners and take the heat for the owners. He's done both.

Roger Goodell is like Pete Rosell in reverse! While Rosell presided over a huge increase in NFL popularity, Goodell is presiding over its demise.

Potentially. If sponsors walk or the TV contract comes in lower that's his deathknell. Remember, the owners decided to stand with the players a couple of weeks ago and the owners took it in the shorts. That was their decision not Goodell's. I think the owners totally missed the fans level of anger at this. They were trying to managed the players and the corporate PR and forgot that their fans are mostly blue collar fans.

NASCAR has a much deeper and much more visible corporate connection but they managed this trend 100% in the fans direction. You protest and you are fired. Two of the biggest owners in Petty and Childress came right out and said they would fire on the spot any employee that protested. And guess what. Nobody protested. Their fans wouldn't stand for it. And the corporate people likely were behind the scenes thanking the owners.

Good guy is a joke

How a player can be suspended for events that entailed zero charges before he was an employee is baffling

Just as strange as a superstar being suspended for the amount of air in a ball

That's the bottom line. Jerry runs this league. He is the kingmaker. Roger Goodell is the Vader to Jerrys Palpatine.

The libtard owners of the league (both coasts) are making the decisions. You have to admire them in a way...they're willing to lose millions and maybe billions over the next few years to push a leftist ideaology.

Except it makes those owners money, folks that don't give two sheets now all of the sudden buy merchandise. The tv deal is what it is. It is only the bible belt and midwest that it affects at all

You realize that one owner in a private meeting threw him under the bus to get a leg up for negotiation leverage over another billionaire. You and your ilk think this is about racism and the white man holding the black man down, this was a negotiation ploy, they don't care about the black man or the players, but let's SJW this whole thing.

There's nothing wrong with the phrase McNair used. It's a common colloquial term used often in every day life.

What was wrong with the phrase was the context, which had racist overtones because it compared NFL players to inmates

nhayden's point is the "inmate running the asylum" isn't the players, but Roger Goodell.

If that's the case, McNair didn't say anything racist.

Players switch teams for the biggest money so "your guy" last year now plays for the dreaded enemy. It's their right to do it and our right to not care about them. The NFL is Rollerball to me. No loyalty, no heros. If one breaks put another in. So if one disrespects America and kneels, put another one in. I don't even know who they are.

And as far as the owners, there are fewer scummier than Jerry Jones! Gone are the days of owners like Clint Merchison. I don't care about them either!

Adios NFL

Let's not get too misty eyed for the old days. Back then owners and front offices mistreated players and milked those guys for everything they had, all the while, paying them sh*t.

Go read up in some of the players attempts to negotiate w Tex shram

Jerry is going to risk the very much believed notion that he has more influence than any other owner in the league on this issue and it probably wont turn out how he wants it.

Also, to hire Boies right now with what's going on with Weinstein sounds incredibly dumb.
