Like dcaggie04 said, The Patriots have made a living out of selling their backup QBs.

Huard
Cassel
Hoyer
Mallett
Garappolo

The Pats have 'sold' a grand total of one of those for a total of a 7th rd pick
What did the Pats spend to get them?

7th for Cassel, Hoyer was UDA (right?), Mallet was a middle rounder after being projected as a first, and Jimmy was late 2nd.

Mallet was probably a loss for them, but they're buying cheap and selling slightly less cheap. Cassel and Jimmy both stepped in and did well.

I would say Jimmy is different than the others because he was so highly sought after in the draft then got some film and looked great (2-0, 4-0 TD to INT, 9.3 YPA, and 68% comp).

I think it is fair to argue that Jimmy isn't destined to fail because he's a New England back up.

Seems like every year there is some backup QB that has a good game and is the next Joe Montana. This year it's Garappolo.

The list of busts is long and undistinguished:

Jeff Hostettler
Scott Mitchell (though he did have one good year)
Matt Flynn
Matt Cassell
Matt Shaub (avoid all Matts might be a good rule)
Ryan Fitzpatrick

Yeah, him too. He had a couple nice years at Carolina, but was pretty much JAG.

The list of backups that became true franchise QB's with another team is pretty small. The only one that comes to mind is Mark Brunnell.

Most are listing successful QBs that didn't change teams. Changes when you look at changing teams.
Green Bay traded for Brett Farve.

Glanville was coaching the Falcons at the time and hated that Farve was drafted. He got very little action, threw 4 passes, two of which were intercepted - one returned for a TD. His only other play was an 11 yard sack.

The Falcons chose poorly.

There are plenty of examples of backup quarterbacks going on to be good to great starters. Rich Gannon is another that comes to mind.

Young was Montana's backup 1987-1990
