Just needed to hand the ball off. Let play clock get inside 5. Hand it off a couple of times. That's it.

I cannot get over that series of play calls. Run the ball 3x and gain 1-2 yards a pop and you're looking at a 35-40 yard FG for a kicker who made 16/17 (94%) from 30-49 yards this year.

If you took 100 random guys on this message board and told them "you're up 8. 3 minutes left in the game. Your kicker is nails. You've got 1st and 10 at the 22 and you're averaging 6+ yards/carry. What do you do?" every single one of them would have said run the ball 3x, kick the FG, and hoist the Super Bowl trophy. And yet some multimillionaire coach was too ****ing stupid to figure it out.

That was the dumbest decision since Kevin Steele's decision to run the ball with <40 seconds left against UNLV (which was losing and had no TOs).

Miss the 54 yard and Brady has good field position.

Dirty Birds were that scared of Brady.

NE did a great job of clamping down on the run in the 2nd half. I think what got into was Atlanta's head was (1) the FG was no chip shot considering the pressure situation and (2) something like 5-6 runs in a row had gone for 1 yard or less, including a few losses and no gainers. Even though Atlanta ran well earlier, that had dried up and was a big reason that most of their 2nd half drives were stifled.

Before the sack and the hold, they had 1st and 10 on the 22. If Atlanta hadn't put its head up its ass, they wouldn't have had to kick a 54 yarder.

Something maybe overlooked is something Shanahan said regarding their ability to run - it went out the window after an injury by one of their offensive lineman - can't remember exactly who. Said it factored into their play calling down the stretch. Said they felt they couldn't run the ball.

Even so, given the situation, no gain or 1-2 yds losses 3 times would probably still have won them the game.

It was their RT right? Could have just run the ball to the left side. Not a great excuse for Shanahan

Incredibly bad game management by Atl. It was like I was watching the cowboys.

Shanahan making excuses for him the being sole reason they lost.

Nothing else mattered in this game. Brady wouldn't have had a chance for any heroics had they just run the ball up the middle 3 times when they had 1st and 10 from the 22.

More time would have run off the clock and they likely would have had a field goal and been up 10 (can't assume 100% he makes the field goal), but even if his misses, there is less time on the clock and you aren't worse than where you were when you punted them the ball because you got taken out of field goal range.

Yep. You know the Atl coaches are going to have a hard time swallowing this one when they reflect.

Hasselback just gave a great interview on Mike and Mike as to why the whole "they should have run the ball" criticism is lazy.

His problem was that they were in shotgun and did a five step drop which gave the defender time to get to Ryan when all they needed was one yard.

Since Shanahan is about to leave to take over the 49ers, what does it matter to him anyway?

Falcons lost the game more than the Patriots won it

That is definitely true, and maybe this isn't the thread for this, but a thought I had on my drive in to work today was that I don't think the patriots make their comeback if Jimmy Garroppalo is at QB. Or anyone else, you insert the player. It's true the Falcons gave the game away, but the patriots as a team and Brady as the QB, had to do their part to win the game.

I think this is the game where you say it was equal. It took some colossally bad plays by ATL and some insanely good plays by the Pats to capitalize.

Isn't it interesting that NE has now had two SBs just handed to them because of poor game management by Seattle and Atlanta? How does that change the Brady/Belicheck legacy if they have lost 4 SBs?

To me it is very apparent that they cheated their way to some wins and got extremely lucky in others. Teams beating themselves.

Marshawn was NOT going to be stopped @ the 1 and the Falcons ran the ball 5 times only after being up 25 points. That's just unheard of

A blackjack player wrote a scathing article on the Falcons' clock mismanagement. They really, really screwed up.

Bill Barnwell has a better write up on ESPN. There were a lot of factors in play and it's a great read.

Ref not calling a facemask against the NE defender on the 3rd and 23 play where Matthews got busted for holding was a potential gamechanger as well. If he had called it, it would have been offsetting fouls, and ATL would have had a redo of the previous down and spot. Instead, it it ended up 3rd and 33, with the ball being moved back an additional 10 yards, and thus out of field goal range.
