Cowboys made it with an 8-8 record back in the late 90s. They were painfully average in every aspect of the game. This year's Texans are far from the worst playoff team ever.

That being said, you are the most likely 1 and done candidate this year. How much y'all wanna give for Romo? He looked pretty sharp today!

The Raiders' QB situation makes it very possible for the Texans to win in Round 1. While their offense is pathetic no question, they are among the elite defensively.

as stated on the post-game show...

the 2016 Texans scored 25 touchdowns this season --- the fewest of any playoff team since the league went to the 16-game schedule in 1978.

that being said...beating the Raiders is very possible

interesting note though...

during the regular season, the Texans beat 2 playoff teams ---> Chiefs and Lions.

the Cowboys only beat 3 in the regular season

The AFC has got to have the worst group of teams for a conference in NFL history right now

When you account for the QB injuries

Also, the Raiders are the worst team in the NFL in average yards per play allowed (6.1), which gives the Texans a good shot at winning even with the moribund offense. Coupled with the Raiders disastrous QB situation and the fact they are playing in Houston, I don't see any way the Texans should lose this one.

Another interesting factoid from 2016:

The Texans scored 49 fewer points than the opposition this season, yet managed a 9-7 record.

The Chargers scored 13 fewer points than the opposition this season, yet were 5-11.

The Texans are looking like they are headed toward a fall next season; I would expect a 7-9, 6-10 season in 2017 from them.

Last 3 teams with #1 defense in NFL played in the Super Bowl. Miami beat Pitt in regular season and could repeat Sunday. Texans should beat the Raiders, then would play KC again if the Fins win.

If Texans beat KC again, they will either travel to NE or host Miami.

Dallas likely gets the Pack or Giants in their first game and either could win. 13-3 is a snakebit record that has seen 1 and done results.

Love the optimism but what was the offense ranked of those teams that made the Super Bowl? The Texans is putrid

Miami had Ryan Tannehill and injured Ben Roethlisberger that day. I do not think that Pitt loses to them again and honestly if the Texans face off with the Steelers, I think they will get dismantled.

The 1979 LA Rams made it to the Super Bowl after going 9-7 and ranking 15 of 28 on offense and 11th on defense. Much like the Texans, they won a weak division and had their first playoff game at home. They were defeated by the Steelers in the twilight of their 70s dynasty but actually led 19-17 going into the fourth quarter.

Weird things happen in the NFL.

In terms of DVOA, Houston finished the year 29th overall...30 offense, 15 defense, 3 special teams.

Only offenses worse by DVOA were the Rams(by a lot...historically bad) and the Jets who finished last in overall DVOA on the year.

I'd be curious to see if they are in fact the worst team in terms of final DVOA to make the playoffs...despite what you may or may not like about that particular measurement.

From Chris Wesseling on nfl.com....

Texans 25 TDs are the worst total by any playoff team in a non strike year since 1978.

edit...nevermind this was already stated...

The 1979 Rams didn't play their first playoff game at home. They beat the Cowboys in Texas Stadium in what turned out to be Roger Staubach's last game.

Don't remind me. Staubach had one of his worst playoff games ever and the offense didn't really show up. The Cowboys still almost won and probably would have beaten the Steelers in the SB.

So this playoffs Texans team ended up being better than an Oakland team with a rookie 3rd string quarterback playing. Also with an AP LT out. Guess that shows the OP.

Well, the Texans were playing without the reigning Defensive POTY, a bunch of no name offensive linemen and a QB that should a 3rd stringer somewhere.

I think they did OK.

It does. Either way you spin it, the Raiders were the lesser team. If anything they are the worst team in playoff NFL history
