I've been working in the forging industry since 2007. Our main business was O&G but we recently transitioned into industrial and aerospace. I've got experience in both engineering design as well as process development and implementation. I currently live in the Houston area and would like to remain in this area but I'm not opposed to moving elsewhere within Texas. If anyone has anything available, please let me know.

What do you want to do? Do you want to be a manufacturing engineer on something else in the OG industry? I could refer you but I can't guarantee anything.

It's kind of ironic that you posted this as this is my home town. Unfortunately the wife doesn't want to live in a town that small. Trust me, I've tried.

Thanks for your response. Since I've been in the O&G business since 2007, I've seen the ugliness and the ups and downs of the industry. I'm really looking for a change in scenery. I'm trying to explore almost any other industry but I haven't ultimately settled on anything in particular. I've heard that the automotive industry is quite brutal. I'm quite interested in space and agriculture but not sure what that would bring.

How well versed are you on the forging process? Dril-Quip forges their own well heads in Houston. They're a great run company, I don't work for them, but I can certainly point you to friends who do.

Do you think you could transition to a metallurgist/SME? Cameron (now owned by SLB) had a great metallurgy group. I always enjoyed talking with those guys. I'm sure FMC/Technip could've always use a guy who knows ASTM grain size and can spot BS about reduction of area.

I know OG has been a wild ride, but there's an upswing of hiring going on right now.

One of our steel suppliers is basically one dude who knows everything about metallurgy. I'd love to own a business like he's built. All he does is solve engineering problems and shares his knowledge willingly. The knowledge is free, the steel ain't.

Dril-Quip WAS a great run company.

I've done business with them over the past year as my company acquired their forging, heat treat, and machining processes. They pushed out the old guard and brought in new leadership years ago and it has been downhill ever since.

I would never work for them unless it was a C-Suite position with a golden parachute. Look elsewhere.

Used to forge their own wellheads, now that part of the business is outsourced but all fab and other manufacturing is still completed by Dril-Quip

Company I work for, Precision Food Innovation, is hiring a Production Manager here in San Antonio. We manufacture food conveyance equipment and it's very interesting work. Great benefits, profit sharing, and employee owned. Worth the look if you're interested in a management role. Can't have enough Aggies on board.
