Howdy,

My name is Kalli Johnson and I am a senior Environmental Geoscience major with minors in GIST and Geography. I am currently looking for a full-time, or internship, position by the time I graduate in May of 2021. I'm happy to forward you my resume or any other information needed. If you know of any opportunities, I'd appreciate any assistance.

Thanks and Gig'em!

What kind of position are you looking for? That means a lot. What has your work experience been so far? Upstream is still coming around slowly, so you might have a tough time. If you don't get any bites real quick like, consider grad school and hopefully when you finish things will be better.

Thank you, Jim! I am mainly looking for entry-level positions, but am applying to internships as a back up because those can lead to full-time positions with the company. I have done three undergraduate research projects and did an internship with the EPA over the summer, where it has now turned into a part-time position this semester. Unfortunately, the department I'm in, for the EPA, is overstaffed. So, they will not be offering me a full-time position.

With my GIST minor, I have proficient experience using ArcGIS Pro, ArcMap, and ArcGIS Online. I have beginner experience using Python, MATLAB, AutoCAD, ENVI, DroneDeploy, and Pix4Dmapper. I also have beginner experience using equipment such as Garmin GPS, RTK-GPS, and total stations. I will be using YSI 556 MPS sensors this semester for my capstone project, but haven't used them yet.

As for grad school, I don't plan on going anytime soon since I don't have enough money. However, in the future, I'm hoping to save enough to go back or maybe have my company help me pay for some of it.

With that kind of software experience, I would look into consultants who specialize in remediation. I don't have any leads, but there are tons of them.

Get all this into the " about " section of your Linkedin account. Start looking at big engineering firms like HNTB, HDR, Jacobs etc. Find Aggies on Linkedin with similar skill sets and reach out to them for assistance. Work the Aggie network. You have a very desirable skill set for many firms these days.

You have the exact same major/minors that I graduated with, and I'm sure we know some of the same people because I graduated in 2018. I applied for environmental remediation jobs across the state but was lucky to end up in a full GIS position.

Unfortunately I can't help on the job search, but I hope you find something that suits you. Just don't get disheartened if it takes some time. Good luck!

Where do you want to work? With that skill set you shouldn't need to settle for an internship. Are you comfortable with fieldwork?

Thank you all for the advice and kind words! I really appreciate it.

As for the GIS Specialist job in Fort Worth, I saw your post the other day regarding looking for positions at your civil engineering company. I applied a few days ago!

As far as where I want to work, I'm honestly open to anything. I am looking more at engineering firms, since a lot of these companies need environmental people. I have connections at HDR in the Austin office and have been looking at AECOM, Jacobs, Wood, etc. I haven't done much field work, since the only field work I've done is through my GNSS course where we used the equipment I mentioned above. However, I'm open to anything as long as I gain experience. This will help me narrow down what exactly I may want to do in the future!

If y'all have any more advice for a new graduate, please let me know! Again, I appreciate everything told to me so far. I have been trying to utilize the Aggie Network with Linkedin, TexAgs, HireAggies, etc.

Thanks,
Kalli

Not aware of any specific openings but Koch does a fair amount of hiring straight out of college through internships. Koch is serious about environmental too.

If you end up in the interview process with Koch, shoot me an email for some pointers. Johndeere5205 @ yahoo.com
