#SAVEPOULTRYSCIENCE
This doesn't seem to be about money, the number of students or faculty. It is just a new Vice-Chancellor, that doesn't understand our university or our department, wanting to make a change for the sake of change without understanding how it impacts our industry. This plan will eliminate the Poultry Science degree and Poultry students would now receive an Animal Science degree. The Poultry industry believes this would be the first step to limiting poultry curriculum and research until it is eventually nothing. The industry leaders such as Cargill, Tyson, Pilgrim, Hy-Line International and others have expressed that they need Poultry Scientist not Animal Scientist.
The following is a letter from one of the leaders in the Poultry Industry asking for friends of the department to please contact the Vice-Chancellor to "Save Poultry Science"
Thank you

We were recently informed that the Vice-Chancellor and Dean of the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences at Texas A&M University, is considering a possible change to the Poultry Science department. This potential change would result in the department being merged with another department in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences. From what we know a final decision on this matter has not been made by the administration. However, now is the time to show the industry's support for the department. If the Texas A&M Poultry Science department is merged, only five independent poultry science departments would remain in the United States. Such a move by the university administration would significantly limit the department's effectiveness of their impactful academic, research, and Extension/outreach programs. Overall, this potential elimination of the department would have a substantial impact on the commercial poultry industry in Texas and nationwide. The elimination of this department could potentially impact the industry through a loss of crucial research opportunities and most importantly, loss of future workforce with fewer graduates in this field.
A few of the accomplishments of the Texas A&M Poultry Science department are:
Undergrad enrollment has increased from Fall 2016 (112 students) to Fall 2019 (203 students).
Graduate and Ph.D. enrollment and graduation have been steadily increasing since Fall 2012.
External Research Funding has been continually increasing since 2015. Currently, in 2019 the total research funds are at 3.83 million dollars.
It is critical that we support keeping the Texas A&M Poultry Science department independent from another department in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences. As a member of the commercial poultry industry, please contact the Vice-Chancellor and Dean of the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences, Dr. Patrick Stover to inform him of the importance of keeping this department independent. Dr. Stover's contact information is below.
