Just heard that from a colleague. Is this true?

It is being proposed as part of a report commissioned by President Banks on the efficiency and effectiveness of A&M. This is just one of many proposed changes to colleges and departments around the university, the biggest being the establishment of a College of Arts & Sciences which would incorporate the current colleges of Liberal Arts, Science, and Geosciences, and would also see the moving of the Department of Visualization into this new college. The report is open for public comment for several more days, you can review and submit comments at feedback.tamu.edu.

Well that's one way to reach their inflated enrollment target for the college of engineering. Do they realize most of the CS majors could not qualify for College of Engineering?

Also wtf is up with College of Arts and Sciences? Those should not be grouped together. They are trying to hide the low SAT scores of the liberal arts majors by mixing them with the science majors.

I'm COSC '05. Knew I wanted to go heavy/civil when I graduated and was disappointed in the lack of courses that leaned towards civil instead of commercial. Maybe this move will help with that.

This!

Whatever it takes to bring on socialism, the libs will do.

Needless to say, I'm disappointed with our university administration.

I mean, Arts & Sciences is a fairly conventional approach in academia. Here are a few universities that do this:

Yale
Duke
North Carolina
Univ of Washington
Univ of Michigan
Univ of Virginia
Georgia
Vanderbilt

The point is, it's not some radical idea that was pulled out of nowhere.

I realized pretty quick out of school the value of options an engineering degree provided over COSC.

This is 2010, so I don't remember the exact requirements, but I sent a note to TBPELS to review my COSC degree for FE exam eligibility. They came back with a list of courses (Diff. Eq, Calc II and III, Physics II, few others) that I needed and I took them at UH. It really wasn't that much of a gap to sit the FE. Especially now that NCEES has added Construction as a Civil Depth, it seems silly not to convert COSC into something like an Engineering Tech degree.

Of course I went on to get my PE and immediately pivot out into consulting. So a largely fruitless journey.

Might want to check your bias there Jack..... the SAT scores for incoming Liberal Arts students is almost identical to those in the College of Science. For the most recent year reported, the median SAT score in Liberal Arts was 1270, the mean was 1253. For the College of Science, the median was 1280 and the mean 1277. That's a one question difference. Most every major Tier 1 university has a College of Arts and Sciences. The College of Geosciences is being folded in to the new College too. Guess what? The SAT scores of incoming Geoscience students is lower than those in Liberal Arts!

So many perceptions many of us Old Ags have of what A&M is today are just flat wrong. Do your research before you form and share your opinion.

I was (still am I suppose) one of the few heavy industrial guys when I was there.

The coursework leans commercial because it's about as close to center of the road as you can get in terms of the major construction sectors, and because most of the CIAC companies are commercial companies and pay for that influence.

Were it up to me, there would be several changes in the overall course curriculum that would provide a much more well rounded education that isn't so commercial focused.
