My son is a junior at Southlake Carroll and wants a career in animation. His college focus early-on has been CalArts and other high-profile art schools in LA, and he has spent time on those campuses. A&M has always been a strong possibility, but candidly he was told he can't get in because he's not Top 10 @ Carroll Sr HS. (This is a very competitive district. Last year there were nearly 40 students with a 100 or better average outside of the top 10 percent).
Are there any Vizzers here or does anyone have any insight in the Department of Visualization that can help us understand the admissions process for the program? Is it heavily weighted on the portfolio like art schools? Does indicating this program on your application help in the wholistic review process? His HS electives include Art, Animation and 4 years of Mandarin in addition to Cross Country, so he's a well-rounded individual, but not sure it carries the same weight with A&M as it does art schools.
He's taking the SAT this March, but already enrolled in SAT prep classes targeting the May test.
Lastly, we are planning a tour, but I'm also trying to find current students who also considered CalArts, SCAD, LCAD, etc and let him hear from them.
