Howdy TexAgs!

I'm a 22 year old student. I'll give y'all a little background before my question. I'm an SATX native, and started college at UTSA. I did a year of football, and two full academic years, but didn't do so hot with grades. I took a break and enlisted with the Army reserves and I'm currently in Virginia. I've enrolled as a full time at a local community college to boost my grades a bit, and I'm doing excellent after taking a break for the army and maturing a bit. If I receive all A's for this semester (very high probability), I'll have a 2.6 cumulative GPA. I also have quite a few transferrable credits I've received due to my combat medic training with the army.

Now for my question: what can I do to better increase my chances of admission? Do I even have a decent chance at being admitted? I know my first go at college at UTSA wasnt stellar by any means, but I've made great improvements since then and have been showing good academic standings. Is there anything I should be doing now to make my application better? Is there any specific point of contact i should reach out to better my chances? Is there a military admissions department that could help out?

Thanks for taking the time to reply, I appreciate it!

Your academic department will mainly focus on two things as they compare you to other applicants: GPA and completion of the courses from their course sheet by the deadline to apply (http://admissions.tamu.edu/transfer/majors).

You can call an admissions counselor at 979-458-0950.

TAMUAdmissions,

In the same vein, I've got a Navy veteran friend who is applying to A&M's electrical engineering program but it having a hard time getting straight answers about his military course credits.

His status with 30+ credit hours makes him a transfer student, so a counselor told him he wasn't able to be selected for Blinn team or the engineering satellite schools. But the college of engineering will only accept his non-engineering track courses like physical education (no calc, or physics). Seems like A&M is shorting him on both accounts here.

In general, what are the options for a veteran in that situation? Is testing out of freshman classes still an option?

Thanks in advance.

Admissions has two folks who specialize in issues that veterans face. He should talk with one of them:

Karen Cambronero, 979-862-4087 or Karen Allen 979-845-2860

He also can reach a general admissions counselor at 979-458-0950. Counselors at that number are very well trained on what the academic departments are looking for.

Binn TEAM and certain other options are offered to select freshmen applicants. https://testing.tamu.edu/Exams/CLEP gives details on testing out of classes. http://admissions.tamu.edu/transfer/admitted shows options for transfer applicants if you look under Transfer Initiatives.

Thanks TAMU Admissions for the help. I've forwarded those contact details onto him. I'm sure he appreciates it.
