The Water Security Initiative (WSI), led by Professor Wendy Jepson, is part of Texas A&M's Institute for Sustainable Communities and Environmental Grand Challenges Program.

The WSI seeks to address the global water crisis through research, teaching and engagement with local communities.

As part of the initiative, the College of Geosciences offers a 10-day service learning trip for first-year students to study the global water crisis in Costa Rica.

The students work with locals to discuss sanitation and conservation, as well as study the area's water systems.

Impacted by their experiences in Costa Rica, the students started a new student organization and organized a Brazos River cleanup.

Twelve students from the original group also traveled to the Dominican Republic, independent of the university, to build and distribute ceramic water filters to households.
