I do not remember one higher than this one for $96 million. Guyger has zero assets so suing her for $10,000 would have been just as effective. The jury almost doubled the family's requested amount.

Serious question: what happens in cases like this where the person will never be able to pay even a small fraction of that?
You do not have a soul. You are a soul that has a body.

Fortunately the city of Dallas got themselves dropped from the suit otherwise the City would have been tagged for at least some of this insane amount. This is one way cities go bankrupt or end up having terrible public service. It is like these juries do not see that they are often punishing themselves.

The families lawyer was just on TV and sounded like he is still looking for a way to go after the city.

Outrageous sums of money relative to the net worth of assets/income people or companies have........ its atrocious.

Tort reform in civil courts to have caps on payouts relative to an individual or company net worth and income/revenue need to be enacted. We also should have % caps on what trial lawyers/firms can collect in judgements too.

Alex Jones should not lose his business (even though he did libel the families). Neither should have left wing Gawker have lost theirs in the Hulk Hogan suit (even though I agree he should have won his case too). And Botham Jean's family should not have been awarded $96 million which will bankrupt Guyger for life.... these kinds of judgements are unreasonable.

She was not on duty. The City should not be on the hook for that anyways.

This is all about revenge by ensuring that if she ever gets out of prison, she will be forced to live a destitute life because anything she earns will go to the plaintiffs.
"If you will not fight for right when you can easily win without blood shed; if you will not fight when your victory is sure and not too costly; you may come to the moment when you will have to fight with all the odds against you and only a precarious chance of survival. There may even be a worse case. You may have to fight when there is no hope of victory, because it is better to perish than to live as slaves." - Sir Winston Churchill

It's extraordinarily clear this was a horrible case of wrong place wrong time and she is extremely remorseful. No showing up for a circus trial so attorneys can exploit headlines and further a false narrative was her only move.

. I doubt she has the money to hire a defense attorney in a civil case. I also doubt she wanted to fight the case and have to testify

As I was reading the story, I kept asking myself how the City of Dallas was going to come into play given the outrageous amount.

If I remember correctly, the city and police department already got dismissed from their civil cases. I think the apartment complex may have paid out a settlement.

If the lawyer gets 30%, what do they get 30% of? The judgement or what's actually collected?

I believe 35% plus expenses is the standard

But 35% of what? Jury awards $100,000,000. The defendant has $10,000.

Does the attorney get all of what's recovered since they'll never recover anything close to $35,000,000?

The judgment is just a piece of paper.

The lawyer gets a % of the money paid/collected

In that scenario, the lawyer is entitled to 35% of the gross recovery.

Attorneys fees come off the top of them 35% of what's left. Victims get little or nothing.

generally, "willful and malicious injury" are not dischargeable
