Undergraduate and graduate education in Liberal Arts has become a drain on society. Degrees in things like Journalism, Communication, Political Science, Art History, and Gender/Race Studies have become the landing spot for those who lack the academic ability for useful programs like Engineering, Business, Science, and Healthcare. Most Liberal Arts degrees lead to poor paying jobs in the food service industry. This has resulted in massive student debt that is unsecured by commensurate employment income and unprecedented incompetence in the workplace. Prove me wrong.

Wrong.

Useless degrees like gender studies or insert minority here studies degrees need to go away. Classic liberals arts degrees are still, and will continue to be, valuable.

Federal student loans that allowed universities to wildly increase student tuition and fees have caused way more damage to higher education than liberal arts degrees. Universities started competing for student loan money by creating luxury dorms, high-end rec centers and other amenities that brought in students but did little to improve the quality of education.

Add to that a misguided push in k-12 education to send everyone to college, and you get the mess we have now. Hell, kids now have to pay for community college classes to get licenses that high schools used to prepare students to earn. There is starting to be some correction on that, but not enough.

They need to make the schools fund student loans. Degree programs that have high default rates and don't provide the universities with a positive ROI will then disappear on their own.

OP doesn't understand western civ.at.all.

You are stuck in this weird paradigm where the chief end of education is employment. God help us.

Valuable in what way? With a career of over 35 years in a variety of industries, I have yet to see demand or value for Classical Liberal Arts.

They give those degrees away like candy now. They've become the new high school diploma.

The chief end is productivity - the ability to contribute something to society. Which usually does translate to employment. Modern Liberal Arts programs have become nothing but ideological indoctrination centers that result in "destructivity".

There should be some kind of correlation between expected income and the cost of a degree. A liberal arts degree is not as valuable as an engineering degree based upon expected income. But universities charge the same amount per hour of tuition regardless. Banks should also be giving out loans based on risk and ability to pay the loan back. A loan for a liberal arts degree would be much riskier compares to a loan for an engineering degree. The resulting interest rate would be higher based on that as well. If the free market would work without government interference we'd have lower student debt, people wouldn't take out debt as much if the interest rate was higher. The professors would also get paid much less as well because their tuition rates would be lower. Supply and demand is broke in education. It doesn't correlate to the reality of what these degrees are worth.

Most Humanities degrees thet contain the word "studies" are all but Neo Marxist cult indoctrination with a thin wrapper of basic university courses to make it seem academic instead of ideological to the point of being religious.

That's the truth of what they have become. It's fine to have religious education. Let's just be clear on what that constitutes and implies. These aren't the neutral secular educations they purport to be. They have all the structure of a religious faith, and one based on a vast amount of conjecture backed mostly by philosophical junk science. We need to separate out liberal arts as a study of mankind from religious dogmatic studies of derivative nihilistic or narcissistic Neo Marxist belief systems.

Fallacy of the OP is the discount of further studies beyond undergrad education.

Many undergrad LA major students end up going to medicine, law, and finance.

STEM isn't the only way.

The problem isn't liberal arts or any other degree. The problem is government backed student loans. They skew the average cost of school upward and make people's personal problems a national problem.

Take away government backed student loans and let capitalism take care of what students choose and what universities will offer.

I agree. Liberal arts has been the "dumping" ground for all "special" studies degrees. We still need pre-law, languages, history (classical and military) and other such degrees to balance and broaden ones education.

Now there's a credible answer. But why Liberal Arts undergrads for Law? What course work in LA is uniquely beneficial to studies in Law? Is it possible that this is an outdated path and further evidence of a wasteful legacy system?

Because you don't need cal3 or beyond, and the style of writing is completely different and taught differently than that of a technical engineering paper.

That said there was a point in time where one of the state's (Texas) leading, and only GeoTechnical engineers wasn't even an engineering undergrad lol

I've got Karoline Leavitt, who according to the Google "She graduated in 2019 with bachelor of arts degrees in communications and political science" on line Juan.

Seriously, she says you've got some "Es-plaining to do."

The only actual example of Classic LA education value provided so far is "style of writing". SMH. Examples of successful LA grads are cool and all, but there are far more who never get an ROI because the only value they can contribute is flipping my burger.

You're confusing a trade with education.

I got my education (liberal arts) and then learned my trade (law). Other than the stress of law, I don't regret it at all.

So a society built on a cross between the most radical elements of the Enlightenment and Vocational Tech.

Yeah, that's neither smart nor conservative. I will pass on this idea .

Just because we let Marxists take over Liberal Arts 100 years ago doesn't mean we should throw them out. It just means we should do better understanding soft power and actually work to take back our institutions.
