And how much longer is that number than the estimated life span of the new panels?

Ice doesn't like renewable energy. Hail and snow on solar panels. Ice on wind turbines.

Toss in a hurricane, derecho, or Tornado now and then, we need to be a little careful how we plan and build this stuff.

It can be made to deal with these things, of course. Quick and cheap probably isn't the best solution.
