The secret to any good carnivore diet is moderation. So decrease those trips to Casa do Brasil.

On the Shawn Baker topic, if you listen to some of his comments on IG or podcasts he's obviously a proponent of carnivore diet, but I'd say first and foremost he thinks people need to stop eating sugar and processed foods. He gets that everyone won't eat 3 lbs of steak a day like him, but if they'd cut out all of the junk and just eat real food it would really help our population get healthier.

Paul Saladino is an interesting follow too. He does carnivore plus fruit and raw dairy. A common theme between those two guys is that they also add physical activity into their lives. Baker lifts and Saladino surf, walks, hikes, etc. I think a lot of people don't realize what a difference 30 mins of activity a day could do for them. My wife and I were in Italy for 2 weeks this year and I lost weight on that trip even though I drank wine and beer every day and ate pasta, steak, charcuterie, and pastries for breakfast most days. We were also walking between 12,000 - 22,000 steps a day.

I know you aren't burning a lot of calories just walking, but I think the benefits are multifold. Gets you out in fresh air and sun for vitamin D. Resets your mind. Another easy thing to track because we all have phones. I make sure and get in an average of 5 miles a day, some days more, some less. Take a 15 minute walk around the block a couple of times a day. Walk outside your office. Any time you can get in.

I'm gonna hit it hard after the first of the year and try to drop the 5-6 I put on the last couple of months, then add another 6-8 after that. Great advice up in this thread, will save it and refer back. I'm lucky, I actually don't mind raw veggies at all and dig protein so I'm going to give it a run. Last time I dropped weight, it was the watching the plus/minus and tracking it for a while until it becomes second nature.

You can make a passable low carb pizza crust a variety of ways so you can enjoy pizza guilt-free.

One super easy way is to make small pizzas on low carb tortillas. I'll eat two of those and its only 8 grams of carbs.

Yep

Also, Trader Joe's has a great low carb pizza crust. Our kids don't eat low carb, but they still love the pizzas we make. The crust is mostly cauliflower.

While the carnivore diet has increased protein intake, decreased calorie intake, and made a bunch of 40 YO sickly people get much healthier, there is evidence, no surprise, that this diet is not conducive to telomere length, which is the key to longevity. Cruciferous vegetables, phytonutrients, and exercise have to play a role in the long game. And carbs aren't evil. They're just abused by undisciplined people.

Exercise has very little to do with weight loss. Lot of benefits, but you can plough through the calories you burn in running 10 miles in about 10 minutes.

I'm 6'3" tall and in 2013 I was pushing 300lbs. I knew I had to do something so I began researching and kept coming back to a website called Mark's Daily Apple. He pushes a more keto based diet as opposed to carnivore but a lot of the basic premise is the same. Cut out carbs, seed oils, sugar. I got on the diet and in just about a year I went from 289lbs to 189lbs. People were asking me if I was recovering from an illness because the pounds shed off so fast. One thing I noticed was that I could be satisfied on less food. Before I could eat a 16 oz ribeye plus a huge blob of mashed potatoes and salad. When I cut out the potatoes I would feel full on about 10 oz of steak and a little salad. I read of some study that showed eating carbs actually makes you hungrier instead of satisfied. I guess that explains why you can sit in front of the tv and eat a whole bag of chips. In the last 10 years I have been able to keep the weight off with relative ease. I am back over 200 now but feel great. I still limit/ avoid carbs especially wheat but I have recently acquired a fetish for Nashville Hot Chicken sandwiches.

ETA: I was able to get off BP and Gout meds in the process.

A rough estimate of the NET calories burned in running a mile in 0.63 x (weight in lbs). So if you weigh 200 pounds, you're looking at 1260 net calories burned.

A double meat Whataburger and large fries with a, uh, Diet Coke is 1,360 calories.

Obviously you are better off with running, swimming, biking whatever than just settling on the couch and shoving Whataburgers into your pie hole, but it is very difficult to outwork a garbage diet.

Of course exercise helps if you want to lose weight, but you will lose far more weight following a diet strictly and walking a bit than by moments of intense exercise interspersed with eating garbage.

A lot of people tell themselves stories about how they have been "so good" by working out at the gym, so they've that one extra caramel Frappucino.

You can be very active and not meet your weight goals because of, like, an hour of poor discipline in the 168 hours of the week.

I do keto, per se.
I don't put a cup of sour cream on everything I eat. Eat meats, cheese, salad , eggs and avocado.
Since I have an auto-immune disease I can tell the difference when I'm in the zone. Unfortunately, I will cheat a little more often as I age.

Helps that we buy beef by the side.

The point is that you can lose weight with a good diet and no exercise, but you can't lose weight with a bad diet and lots of exercise. You simply can't outrun the calorie dense diets in modern western societies.

Youre obviously better off doing both, and someone with a bad diet who exercises will on average live longer than someone with a bad diet who doesn't exercise. But diet is by far the biggest factor in losing weight.

100% correct.

Eating poorly will make it where you would have to exercise multiple hours per day to offset it.

Eat Low Carb and the pounds will fall off. I lost about 1/2 pound per day on average for the first 20+ lbs and then it starts slowing down.

When I started Keto I was walking 2 miles 3X per week, got busy and stopped after about a month, but my weight loss stayed consistent as long as maintained 25 Net carbs or less per day.

I totally get it. But one can eat like an ******* and workout for 6 hours a day and not gain weight, as long as they are burning as many calories as they consume.

The original statement made is completely moronic…

I am thinking about doing the carnivore diet. I assume there are many books/podcasts out there so looking for any recommendations?

My concern is that I can't eat just beef all day everyday, so assume things like fish, chicken, pork, lamb, etc are all fine.

Also, does the craving for carbs go away after a few weeks?

I have tried it for like 2-3 days and I turned into a mad man. I was VERY irritable and yelled at some guy at costco for nothing. I assume this goes away but even my wife was like eat some carbs please.

Sleeping and diet have much more to do with weight loss than exercise. Exercise just really changes how you look at a certain weight.

The first physiologic step in any weight loss program is to burn through your stored glycogen reserves. If you are well fed, you need to generate a roughly 5000 calorie deficit to get there. At this point, your body starts sending out hunger signals, which makes you feel like crap.

You have to admit to yourself that it is OK to be hungry. It really is; you won't die. In a few days, the body realizes that "hey, it's a famine" and starts burning energy reserves (which, for most of us, is stored in ample amounts as fat). You settle into a new normal and won't feel hungry any more.

This has nothing to do with any particular diet.

I went from 5'8", 170, to 152 in my late 40's. Have stayed there for 5 years. I had been doing HIIT, but still putting on a lb/yr. I switched to running, and the weight started coming off about 3 months later. I think the key was that the running needs to be higher intensity in order to build muscle. It's funny - I know I can't lift as much as I could 5 years ago (e.g. benching body weight), but my upper body has maintained the definition even though all I do is run.

Yea, you're better off cutting out all alcohol. This is coming from the guy who loved trying new brews and this time of year loved triples, quds, and abby's. I gave up alcohol a year ago and I don't miss it all. Ok that's a small lie, I did look forward to the end of the work week to have a couple quality beers.

The only challenge I face at times with carnivore and not drinking is not the cravings, because I really don't, but having that carrot at the end of the week that no matter what is planned, or nothing planned, I could still look forward to that beer or pizza. But I'm very binary, pun intended, and I have to go all or nothing.

I'm 42 soon, and my oldest is 5.5, and I want to be around for a long time to not only see my grandkids, but actively play with them. Alcohol and trash food doesn't fit that. Yes, a splurge once a month isn't bad by any means, but the diet is so easy that I went 9 months until I had my first non-animal based food outside of fruit maybe twice a month. Shoot I only scheduled the pizza because your family does "suffer" because restaurant options are limited on carnivore. I even found eating wings fried in vegetable oils trashed my stomach.

So for the long post.

I went carnivore very strictly for 6 months and lost 33 pounds. My brother is a doctor and he, and others, were constantly parroting that crap about it being bad for my cholesterol. I'm the type who never seems to get sick, and i've gone to the doctor twice since I was 18 due to an ear infection.

I finally went to the doctor for a standard check up and bloodwork. My bloodwork came back all perfect.

When you start reading into the food pyramid, and what is parroted by medical "professionals" as nutritional fact, it's hard not to get conspiratorial. It is all pushed by various mega food conglomerates.

Between Covid and diet/nutrition, the medical profession is taking a licking these days.

I will never blindly listen to a doc again. A lot of our fancy red cross badged friends showed their true colors on this board over the last few years and it wasn't good.
