The strawman of EMP's led to the added idiocy of how to steal gas after the apocalypse and coal powered cars. The topic of this thread isn't antique vehicles or what to drive if you happen to survive a world ending event.

It isn't that no one believed that cars can be powered by coal, it's that cars powered by coal is completely irrelevant to the discussion at hand. I hope that helps.
And yet … you continue to 1) first deny all reasonable suggestions. I've seen cringe worthy denials of all sorts of things on this thread followed by odd takes and tangents when links are posted backing up the assertions. Then 2) continue to insist EVs are the bees knees even in an apocalyptic situation & etc.

It's been really quite amusing. Do carry on.
Trump will fix it.

EVs are screwed if the electrical grid gets borked by an EMP. An EMP powerful enough to upend the electrical grid is going to have more deleterious effects than just EVs not working. ICE vehicles, even if they survive the initial burst, aren't going to operate for long with shortages in fuel. People are going to rapidly run out of food and water. Sewage is going to cover the streets. It's gonna be a real ****ty situation.

Surprised that suggestion wasn't already made by the preppers. Probably even less viable than coal.
Actually, if you read the article, it IS viable and people have done it.

Not saying it's a GOOD idea, but it WILL work...
They're not very good about reading articles or logical arguments.

I've heard the exhaust smells like a deep fryer on those.

I've heard the same thing...

This thread was annoying AF as soon as the OP hit "Post".

Not sure if the original concept is even valid at this point.

The EMP doomsday prep should be a mashup of the Religion and Outdoors board to be of any worth.

To make this politics related, I am making note of Romney's mountain chalet in Utah and converting myself into a Level 26 morning about 3 minutes after the apocalypse occurs. Latter Days Saints are really like One Second After Saints.

No, this thread was funny watching the op get mudholed by the whole board. Yalls stupid ass arguments are what made it annoying.

There is no world where I want to imagine mudholing the OP.

And no worries, she'll come along and post another impossibly bad take soon enough.

Stock follow threads can go to B&I board.

Would someone please start a Tesla News thread? There are so many uninformed and misinformed people on this site and the public in general is about Tesla. I barely have enough time to read the back and forth on this dated and completely annihilated premise of a thread, let alone maintain a forum to report worldwide Tesla gains, impacts, vision and occasional setbacks.

This thread has gone down a really weird path. I can tell you that no one is buying or not buying a Tesla on if it will help during an apocalypse.

I will tell you I drove for a meeting from Austin to Plantersville going from 260 to 100 mile range. Charged it at the meeting back to 260 and drove it back to Austin a few dys later with 100 miles range. Charged it at home overnight back to 260 miles for the next day. This 260 miles trip costs me about 60 KW of home charging for about $8. If I drove my BMW X5 the 260 miles at 23mpg would have cost me $35 of premium gas plus a 5 min gas station pour. This is what matters to me an most people. Short commutes saves a bunch of money and also time.

It costs more than $35 of my time to read your post.

EVs are a gimmick from a cost and time savings perspective and a net negative on the total pollution.

So tell me again why people thing they are the future?

Most people can't afford your Tesla or your BMW...so I don't think you really get what matters to "most people"...

The EVs (and his BMW) are more expensive than most people can afford for a vehicle.

So...saving some money over several years will not be on their radar...

Perhaps. It looks like ****, but I'm sure aesthetics don't play into any decisions either...

But, they're also not doing the trip he described in the Leaf...

Quote:

The 2023 Nissan LEAF S is equipped with a 40 kWh lithium-ion battery and has an EPA range of up to 149 miles, while Nissan LEAF SV PLUS models are equipped with a 60 kWh lithium-ion battery that has a range of up to 212 miles.
He drove 150 miles before charging...

It adds about 10k to the price for the bigger battery.

EVs with decent batteries cost money. More than most people want to pay.

Yes...and that one is more expensive...

I'm guessing you don't know many people that aren't poor or lower middle class who couldn't even sniff the price of that car.

Unless they have an oilfield guy in their life...then, they're getting a big ass truck even though they can afford the EV...

I just think they're not really viable for the vast majority of the populace today...

That's why I said "pretty cheap". 28k for a new car is "pretty cheap" in my opinion. Affordable for everyone? No of course not. Buying a new car at all isn't affordable for everyone.

The point isn't to get into the weeds arguing about what affordable means. The point is that EV's offer real benefits and a particular Tesla's cost doesn't mean those benefits no longer exist.

Chevy Bolt is 20k after the tax credit and advertises a 259 mile range

The one that could make that trip is $38K...I know...pocket change for you, but not for most people.

But, the cheap Leaf is good if you just drive around town and know where all the chargers are (there are probably about 8 or 10 in Corpus) and are good about making sure you charge it at night you'll be cool. (I have no idea how I could do that at my house since I have to park in the driveway because I let the GF park in the garage).

Nissan's site says $28,540 after the tax credit for the longer range model.

Chevy says about 20k with the Bolt.

For driving around town you'd basically never need to know where a charger is

$35,800

The 2023 Nissan Leaf has a base MSRP of $27,800, making it the least expensive new EV on the market. The price rises to $35,800 for the longer-range Leaf SV Plus.
I'm going to the beach now. Tide is up so I need 4wd...

I think I'll take my Chevy Bolt because I like getting stuck in the sand.
