EVs are screwed if the electrical grid gets borked by an EMP. An EMP powerful enough to upend the electrical grid is going to have more deleterious effects than just EVs not working. ICE vehicles, even if they survive the initial burst, aren't going to operate for long with shortages in fuel. People are going to rapidly run out of food and water. Sewage is going to cover the streets. It's gonna be a real ****ty situation.

Not sure if the original concept is even valid at this point.

The EMP doomsday prep should be a mashup of the Religion and Outdoors board to be of any worth.

I barely have enough time to read the back and forth on this dated and completely annihilated premise of a thread, let alone maintain a forum to report worldwide Tesla gains, impacts, vision and occasional setbacks.

This thread has gone down a really weird path. I can tell you that no one is buying or not buying a Tesla on if it will help during an apocalypse.

I will tell you I drove for a meeting from Austin to Plantersville going from 260 to 100 mile range. Charged it at the meeting back to 260 and drove it back to Austin a few dys later with 100 miles range. Charged it at home overnight back to 260 miles for the next day. This 260 miles trip costs me about 60 KW of home charging for about $8. If I drove my BMW X5 the 260 miles at 23mpg would have cost me $35 of premium gas plus a 5 min gas station pour. This is what matters to me an most people. Short commutes saves a bunch of money and also time.

It costs more than $35 of my time to read your post.

EVs are a gimmick from a cost and time savings perspective and a net negative on the total pollution.

So tell me again why people thing they are the future?

Most people can't afford your Tesla or your BMW...so I don't think you really get what matters to "most people"...

It adds about 10k to the price for the bigger battery.

EVs with decent batteries cost money. More than most people want to pay.

Unless they have an oilfield guy in their life...then, they're getting a big ass truck even though they can afford the EV...

I don't hate EVs...

I just think they're not really viable for the vast majority of the populace today...

That's why I said "pretty cheap". 28k for a new car is "pretty cheap" in my opinion. Affordable for everyone? No of course not. Buying a new car at all isn't affordable for everyone.

The point isn't to get into the weeds arguing about what affordable means. The point is that EV's offer real benefits and a particular Tesla's cost doesn't mean those benefits no longer exist.

Chevy Bolt is 20k after the tax credit and advertises a 259 mile range

The one that could make that trip is $38K...I know...pocket change for you, but not for most people.

But, the cheap Leaf is good if you just drive around town and know where all the chargers are (there are probably about 8 or 10 in Corpus) and are good about making sure you charge it at night you'll be cool. (I have no idea how I could do that at my house since I have to park in the driveway because I let the GF park in the garage).

Chevy says about 20k with the Bolt.

For driving around town you'd basically never need to know where a charger is
