Trudeau blocks trucker BTC addresses

The truckers can transfer their bitcoin to another wallet, but if the authorities know an address where it once resided they can conceivably follow it forever.

That's just one of the fallacies of the bitcoin myth. Given the will and a little time, trackers can pretty much narrow down the owner of any wallet in the system.

The Feds or Mounties can only stop the activities. If you have a hardware wallet and the feds don't physically take it from you they can't do ****

They can stop you from withdrawing cash that was converted by your bank to bitcoin. They can't stop you from just using Bitcoin as currency eater than trying to convert it to currency

People thinking Trudeau is done after this are a little trigger happy. Canada is a leftist country.

He's probably going to be fine. Best case he will simply be replaced with another leftist. They are never going back to a conservative leader.

I think you have to get a hardware wallet from the get go to ensure it can never be blocked/"confiscated". The experts can correct me if I'm wrong.

This technology (while older than most think) is still relatively new to the public. The easiest thing to understand is no one entity controls the Bitcoin code therefore the ledger. 51% Consensus of all the mining nodes is required to make any changes to the ledger.

If a Govt wanted to try and stop anything....they would need to own themself 51% of the network. (There are many books and white papers out there that cover this topic)

Wallets are different. You as a consumer can go and buy as many wallets as you want and they can be apps on your phone or a physical separate device that you plug into your computer or phone that holds your keys.

What the Canadian govt is doing only impacts the few exchanges based in Canada that any consumer can transact through to buy or sell crypto as well as convert to fiat.

One of the many way around this issue....of the limitless wallets that you purchased that are not app based, you would transfer your BTC to one of those on your own computer first then go to the many websites that will exchange BTC for gift cards directly if you are wanting to purchase goods and services.

It is an inconvenience for sure but the bottom line is.....no government controls the BTC code or ledger therefore does not control BTC. They can mute only via the on and off ramps (ie online exchanges).
Palovic

This is true. The transparency of the ledger is what make this technology not a safe heaven for illicit activity.

The situation we have here is a government is controlling only the on and off ramps for BTC via online exchanges and the banks(which they have always controlled and restricted their access to their accounts).

There are avenues to circumvent the online exchanges with BTC. There are zero ways to free your cash in a bank.

Many on this board make statements regarding BTC from a skeptics standpoint which is understandable and everyone is searching for it's flaw without first doing the appropriate research themself to understand the technology and how it truly works or buy a few sats and experiment.

We seem to lose sight of the real problem.....the monetary system we have known and participated in since birth is based on absolute government and central bank control. This gives power to the few and in the wrong hands (Canada in this instance), they can impose tyrannical restrictions to force compliance to anything they choose. If you do not believe this to be the case and you think banks and government are fair and act in the best interest of the people in all situations, then understanding the benefits of BTC and how it solves many issues with the current monetary system will be extremely challenging.......I know because I used to be a skeptic myself

This sounds like the cash equivalent of burying mason jars full of money around your back yard and stuffed in your mattress only more portable. I suppose that is an advantage. OTHO you have to have electricity and internet to transact. The government could shut down internet traffic or outlaw gift cards. Government doesn't have to control the code or ledger if they can control all means to convert crypto into good and services.

Thank you. Instead of people looking for a gotcha in the only solution available to counter exactly what I've been earning about for month is on this topic, we should all be scared out of our minds that a western government who shares a border with us is shutting off monetary access to protesters for wrong think.

Protesters who are against a vaccine mandate that:
- never made sense for this job role
- doesn't even work anymore
- is not needed considering the severity

Trudeau is a dictator and should be purged.

Thank you sir. Seriously. Thank you.

Yes, we that don't fully understand crypto and block chain ARE looking for holes or flaws in it BECAUSE if we can find those holes, the ass holes in government can too.

Case in point, Trudeau can't stop bitcoin from being sent to you, but he can stop you from turning it into cash and taking it out of your bank. Your counter to this was "you can buy gift cards etc". OK cool. That works. Until Trudeau gets wise and tells Canadian retailers that it's illegal to do that, as well.
Then you counter with "Ok, get your gift cards from Europe or Asia and have them mailed to you."
And Trudeau counters with a mandate making that illegal as well..... wire fraud or mail fraud, he'd call it.

Do you see where I'm going with this?

The no electricity scenario is more the SHTF scenario. Not suggesting the government does that on purpose. Internet can certainly be controlled by the government to crack down on behavior they don't like though. China, Kazakhstan, NK, etc do this all the time. Whether its a polite revolt or a shooting one government can obviously make crypto very hard if not impossible to use. It's good that Trudeau is giving the world a premier on how 1st world free societies will be upended. We should all be taking notes.

Your points are very well understood and have a very high chance of occurring with the current state of things. BTC only serves as a technology to enable change that provides all the principles of sound money along with built in security.....people still must provide some form of action to adopt or change.

I am all for healthy debate to drive towards knowledge enhancement on both sides. We will not progress as a species without challenging ourselves and each other.

this action by canada is why bitcoiners are so passionate about decentralization and security. governments can make it more difficult to use, but stopping it completely is virtually impossible. if trudeau gets to the point where he is theoretically having to ban gift cards to try to control this, he has already lost.

the more extreme measures trudeau takes to attempt to control it, the more creative the workarounds will get. but more importantly, the value proposition of bitcoin is only further proven out and people's eyes are opened to the financial censorship being exerted over them and the need for self-sovereignty. in this way bitcoin is antifragile.
I welcome all to the Rebel cause and the right side of history:

Certainly bitcoin can be laundered through Coinjoin or various other churning operations. And if bitcoin users are motivated enough to buy endless numbers of wallets or engage in endless transactions, they can stay a step or two ahead of the trackers - at least for now.

It can also be used to buy gift cards or other spendable instruments. But not without knowledge. And there are potential consequences. A recent poster on this site said he was barred from various exchange transactions because his bitcoin submission was mixed with "tainted" coin from a churning site. Legitimate gift card sellers face similar problems.

The point is bitcoin isn't just dug out of the ground. From its inception it is traceable (by volume), from a miner's block reward to a receptor, and from that address to another if the owner so chooses. Each time it is sent it is received, and even when mixed it must publicly leave a noted address to be viable at another.

Sifting software is progressing rapidly. Mixed with the foibles of man, it can hone in on transactions that link addresses to purchases or exchange activities that offer disclosure of owner identities. Folks will have to work awfully hard to make sure the Mounties won't soon be knocking at the door.
