That's contributing to the problem - the overall shortage of chassis (trucks) that can move goods.
Well that's not rocket science. Empty containers can easily be moved with a one ton pickup truck and a 40 foot gooseneck trailer. Ask me how I know.

Ha. I was about to post this. It was required reading in business school when I went. One of the more informative books I read and really enjoyed it.

This problem is easy to solve if Biden would cut all the red tape at least temporarily and let operational process experts fix it. Trump would have already done this months ago.

The only reason we are still living this is massive incompetence on a level never before seen or it's on purpose.

It is exactly for situations like this that the Commerce Clause was written. One state is impeding commerce in all of the other states on CONUS at least.

Normally I would be the last person to champion the use of the federal supremacy and Commerce clauses but this misfeasance or malfeasance by California deserves a federal smackdown now.

I seriously don't understand why it took this long for someone to call out and walk through the obvious here. We have umpteen supply chain SME's in this country that could have solved this months ago.

And then one guy on Twitter finally walks through this classic bottleneck scenario and we see results the same day. Just amazing.

There's been a massive chassis shortage for 4+ years. That's not a COVID thing. Ed Emmitt used to talk about it constantly when talking about the Port of Houston.

And having the RR suddenly just stop hauling everything else and dedicate to this? With what power and resources? Engine power for RR is already hard to come by. That's only looking to create a problem with RR freight.

I was at HEB yesterday and there were plenty of empty spaces on shelves.

I didn't notice anything that was completely wiped out; for example, the toothpaste section had some brands, but there was probably about 1/4 the amount of product that is usually there, with a lot of shelf gaps. So maybe you don't get your brand, but you could still get toothpaste.

It's just weird to see all over the store.

Yes. Yesterday I went to Sam's in College Station and there are NUMEROUS whole sections that are completely empty. I haven't seen that since the early days of panic buying in the pandemic.

And my son ordered a small plush toy from China back at the start of September. I got an email to track it's shipment. The last update was October 2nd….when it reached the port at Long Beach. It's been sitting there for three weeks.

Readings through stuff on Twitter is a nightmare. Half the time I can't tell which comment came first which is why many people have to number their comments so you know how to read things in order. If you have to do that, then that is your first clue that your platform is not designed for the use case people are trying to force on it.

Having said that, this guys explanation made sense to me but I'm also familiar with the industry.

Congress should do its job and fix this issue under the Interstate Commerce Clause. That's what it's there for. Republicans should be filing bills to suspend California's emissions laws for a few months (if not permanently), so truckers can get in and start moving containers.

You are correct. California only allowed them to stack two high for whatever reason. Newsome just backed off that last week and is allowing 3, and 4 with special circumstances. It's a cluster. Also, the ship owners are not taking empties back to China because they can't make any money doing that with the high fuel costs....so that's another issue that is causing the pileup.
In my experience, there's no such thing as luck.

No you are not wrong. Commerce Clause was written for those instance.

HATE< HATE the way the Commerce Clause has been abused in the past.

But this situation is very applicable. One state doesn't get to interrupt commerce in all of the rest of the states.
