In 1957 my AF dad was transferred to Wethersfield AB in the UK. I was 10 years old, but my very conservative, political junkie dad had already gotten me interested in politics. The base had a monthly orientation for family members at the base rec center that covered quite a bit about British culture and some do's and don'ts.
There are two things from that orientation that I still remember. The first was that the attendees (briefed by a Lt Col) were told right up front that England was a Socialist country and their political system was much different than ours. The speaker described some aspects of English socialism that most Americans would find strange and cautioned the adults to tread carefully when discussing politics with their new English neighbors and friends. (On base housing in the UK didn't really exist back then, so AF families lived on the economy.)
One comment that stuck out was that socialism impacts the people's work ethic and we would see many examples of that. One example was road construction crews leaning on their shovels, equipment, etc having a smoke and talking to the other blokes instead of actually doing their job. When my dad got home that night I asked him about English socialism and we had a long, and very interesting discussion. I learned about socialism right then and there. And I don't remember my dad mentioning any positive aspects about it.
The second thing I learned is not that important, but very funny - especially now. We were briefed on British cuss words that would sound funny to us, but we were cautioned to not use them. The one I most remember was the word "Bloody". Apparently, at the time Bloody was equivalent to the F word. Of course my American school friends and I used that word a lot among ourselves just for laughs. Now, in the Harry Potter movies, every other word is Bloody. Always cracks me up.
On a side note, over the years I have met a lot of Brits living in the US and always chat them up when I can. Almost to a man, and woman, they prefer our political system - even with all it's warts. They especially prefer our health system.
Edit: I should point out that while my dad was "very conservative" he was definitely NOT racist in any way shape or form. It galls me that the Dems/Libs/msm now try to paint every conservative as a "white supremist and racist". That is a damned lie, but one that seems to be gathering steam. Constantly having to refute and deny that slur is definitely not good for the conservative cause. If a lie is repeated enough times, people WILL start believing it. A favorite tactic of Hitler and Commies worldwide.
