PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) As states around the country lift COVID-19 restrictions, Oregon is poised to go the opposite direction and many residents are fuming about it.

A top health official is considering indefinitely extending rules requiring masks and social distancing in all businesses in the state.

The proposal would keep the rules in place until they are "no longer necessary to address the effects of the pandemic in the workplace."

Michael Wood, administrator of the state's department of Occupational Safety and Health, said the move is necessary to address a technicality in state law that requires a "permanent" rule to keep current restrictions from expiring.

"We are not out of the woods yet," he said.

But the idea has prompted a flood of angry responses, with everyone from parents to teachers to business owners and employees crying government overreach.

Wood's agency received a record number of public comments, mostly critical, and nearly 60,000 residents signed a petition against the proposal.

Opponents also are upset government officials won't say how low Oregon's COVID-19 case numbers must go, or how many people would have to be vaccinated, to get the requirements lifted in a state that's already had some of the nation's strictest safety measures.

Yep. My current command is astounded that the take rates on the vaccine are so low, but yet they still offer no 'carrot' to incentivize members. The fact that DoD leadership can't develop a coherent policy for a virus that is almost of zero threat to healthy, military age people does not give me confidence that they would be able to deal with a crisis vs a near-peer threat like China.

Indefinite does not equal permanent.

It doesn't say permanent but nothing would surprise me with states like that.

Either way, it's such a scary thought how easily they can coerce businesses to doing what they want them to, and not allow the businesses at this point to make the decision

Posted on the flu thread:

I read an article last night with a health expert weighing in on how return to work is going to look and he said even with full vaccination protocol in place that businesses (corporate HQ's) will continue requiring masks for the indefinite future simply because people are scared sh^tless to return to work.

Fully admitting they do nothing other than provide a psychological placebo effect of making us all feel like something is being done even if vaccinated. It's absolutely insane and we are living 1930s Germany right now. People have always been incredulous as to how the Germans just went along with Nazism even though they normally would not have supported it.

Thanks Covidians and Democrats!

We've been working this whole time, and maybe 4 or 5 out of 50 wear a mask. This is in a blue state.

Masks Don't work. They encourage risky behavior by providing a false sense of security. It's quite literally the psychiatric phenomenon of feeling you are more secure hiding behind some object.

I had hoped they did at one point but the science and experimental data is pretty clear by now.

For larger companies with big HQ's the norm is going to be testing at entry, masks required when not isolated in an office and potentially vaccine proof required. Those aren't going away anytime soon. My former employer employs these methods and is still debating if the vaccine will be mandated and, if so, how to handle non-compliance.

Fortune 200. I can promise you most others in this category are doing the same.

edit: it's also the reason why my primary work goal going forward is to avoid corporate employment if at all possible.

The Left's overreach on COVID will spell problems in 22.

If they continue to double down on this insanity in the fall watch for some major blowback.
