Misleading because they're using total deaths instead of breaking it down into seasonal and annual deaths, and they're also not correcting for population. Moreover comparing pandemic deaths to wartime deaths is completely meaningless.

Correct. COVID deaths = 0.15% of the US population. Now do that for those that were on the front lines of those WWI and WWII

Don't worry I'm sure Lord Fauci will find a fix ... 40 years after starting.

Yet nothing will be done to China. In fact, they are being rewarded by China Joe. I'm sorry to those who lost their lives in vain.

Needs to be repeated. 500,000 deaths is about 7 months of abortions

It is not meaningless as a life lost is a life lost. Regardless of if was 1 life in 10 or 1 life in 100.

That said, both parameters are important. Normalizing gives you the magnitude in relation to the population and pleases statisticians, but raw count is more personal and is of concern to everyday people.

CIVIL WAR 3% of US population (18-25 year)
Spanish Flu ~ 1% (18-25 year)
WWII ~ 0.3% (18-25 year)
COVID-19 ~ 0.2% (70-100 year)
WWI ~ 0.1% (18-25 year)

Do you see a trend here.

FYI just for comparison ~0.03% of Chicago's population died from gang activities.

...which is the problem. We shouldn't be afraid of this at the population level. Just like AIDS: at risk populations should take it seriously while the rest of us get on with life.

Measuring "years lost" rather than "lives lost" would give a much more comparable number. Children dying from polio and teenagers killed in the civil war are horrors of a different variety than our elderly getting picked off a few years prematurely.

When I see posts like this, it's like people are working so hard to do everything you can to make it sound like covid is no big deal. When the numbers are presented they just respond with bUt PeOpLe DiE eVrYdAy. wHy ShUd I cArE.

At the end of the day, that is 500k people who are dead. Families who lost someone. Actual people with lives. It's sad seeing an entire political party try so hard to downplay them like they dont matter.

Also I dont understand (nor will I ever) why it's so hard to just admit this virus is a serious problem. A year ago people laughed at that notion, and now even after 500k Americans are dead people are playing the same tune. yeah, we know the vast majority of people survive. But you are also willfully ignorant if you think this virus is no different from the cold.

Whatever, I know I am not going to change your mind. It's just disgusting seeing stuff like this and the OP trying to start circle jerks about how covid is a hoax and all the numbers are fabricated just to get Trump out of office.

Edit: I got curious and checked. While the full data is not yet available, 2020 deaths are on track to surpass 2019 by at least 400k. On average deaths increase each year by 20k-50k. https://apnews.com/article/us-coronavirus-deaths-top-3-million-e2bc856b6ec45563b84ee2e87ae8d5e7

Edit2: Just realized this post I'm responding to may have been a sincere question, in which case I apologize

China gave us this virus from the Wuhan lab. Now the current administrator also known as the Commander in Thief is back giving this lab US taxpayer money.

Any concerned moderates see this as trampling on the graves of the alleged 500k deaths?

Some people find it disgusting to misrepresent scientific data and to use the deaths of ordinary people to further their political gain. To each their own I guess.

Exactly.

According to the Census, the U.S. population was 31,443,321 in 1860.

Back of the envelope calculation: 750,000 deaths / 31,443,321 = 2.39% of the population died in the Civil War

2020 U.S. population = 331,000,000 (estimated) x 2.39% = 7,910,900 deaths

It would be nice to see the numbers that actually died of COVID instead of the numbers we likely see of those that died that happened to test positive for COVID.

except you are wrong and don't have a single iota of evidence to support this absurd claim.

Covid is more serious than the flu and Trump knew that a year ago.

Influenza activity is currently low in the United States and globally.

...the percentage of U.S. respiratory specimens submitted for influenza testing that tested positive decreased from >20% to 2.3% and has remained at historically low interseasonal levels (0.2% versus 12%). Data from Southern Hemisphere countries also indicate little influenza activity.

Although a single death is tragic the question must be asked

How many of the 500K COVID-19 deaths would have died of natural causes without COVID-19?

The other "deaths" list were many young people.
