Has there ever been a president to cause more damage to the Republican Party than Trump. Because of the hatred for him, we now have the most popular president elect ever. The democrats now have control of the house and the senate. Major businesses are starting to distance themselves more and more. Many of his followers are now considered domestic terrorists etc...

GWB.

Senate and House are nearly split. Dems had significant majorities in both in 2009.

The GOP went from GWB to McCain to Romney to Jeb!, and you think the man who brought in 75MM votes and broke every GOP record for minority demographic votes was the worst ever for the party?

Trump was a defibrillator that kept the corpse of the party alive for 4 years past it's expiration.

Was going to post both Bush Presidents.
Both never really were Republicans.
They were ok with Hillary being president.
The inauguration and support of 10% Big Guy at the inauguration will be evidence enough.

Abraham Lincoln.
It took nearly 200 years before a Republican could win in the South.

Edit for Ornlu: 200 years is slightly exaggerated. The actual number, according to Ornlu's calculation, is 117 years.

Rise of the Tea Party within the Republican party will ensure the party (and country) thrives assuming the country doesn't fracture before then. RINOs need to be primaried and ostracized from campaigning under the Republican party.

I will agree that he has done the worst since Nixon. Joe Biden could have been easily dispatched but Trump could not shut up. He lost the election himself.

OP is short sighted take.

Within the next 2 years the market will crash and cancel culture will hit a breaking point. Dems will be in full control and make things worse.

Meanwhile, citizen Trump will be sueing for the next 2 years to finally get election fraud evidence in the courts. In the end, court rulings will prove significant fraud indicating States likely certified the losing candidate.

About 3.5 years in, Biden will have deteriorated so much that the "stuttering" excuse won't be enough for dems to fight off 25A .

Hard to argue that a man that got the second highest vote total in U.S. history and the highest ever for a Republican, is unpopular at least in some regards.

Also the highest number of votes from people of color for a Republican ever.

I think what you might want to ask is if any other Republican has been this unpopular among the highly educated suburban and elite class of this country. Even more importantly, has a Republican ever been this unpopular among the Politico-Media class. Nixon and Andrew Johnson come to mind on the politico-media class.

But its possible Trump is the most unpopular all time among politico-media and cultural elites. As a reminder. Trump is the first president ever to hold office that was not an elected office holder, government official or military General prior to becoming President. It took the US. 227 years to elect its first outsider president.

So I think the damage to the party factor has to be determined by what and who the GOP wants to represent going forward.

Have you considered that maybe the damage was caused more by the unhinged hatred many people have for him? TDS is real... and it doesn't matter what good he did, people with TDS would complain about it.

Don't misunderstand, this isn't support of Trump. But when people's hearts are filled with that kind of hatred, it is caustic. He was hated before he even took office.

Interesting you say this. I think Trumps lack of character has exposed the lack of character among the political elite more than anyone in any of our lifetimes.

Washington is very sick culture. It was when i worked there 20 years ago and its only gotten worse since then.

So, because W won twice he was better for the party? Do you not see that Trump has changed the party forever going forward in a positive way (Latinos, blacks, etc)?

Trump lost Georgia to the Dems. GEORGIA!

The Dems have won the presidential election in Georgia 3 times since 1964.
Republicans controlled House seats in Georgia since '04 and the senate seats since '02.

Destroying the party, such as it was*, was exactly Trump's mission. He created a new party from the ruins he laid down.

What remains, which he built, is the future of conservatism (as opposed to the myopic dogma of old-time republicans; that **** hasn't sold since the 80's).

*Fiscal conservatism, entitlement reform, pro-life, etc... you know, all the **** they promised since GHWB but never delivered and nobody cares about anymore. Trump re-wrote the platform and delivered a decent chunk of it.

I think what trump did for the Republican Party is ensure its very difficult for a rhino to be selected again. Trump changed the narrative of the Republican Party to a nationalist party. To get elected going forward that candidate will have to measure up to earn people's trust. That starts with an America first platform.

Good point, though I don't think Trump changed the narrative as much as tapped into it.
Recall, that no one expected him to win in 2016. He had a better read on the pulse of American than anyone else in either party.
