I lived in Sweden for a year in 2008, the more I learned the more I was happy I was still being paid in the US!

Yeah, I get that. It was good for them to show how Sweden walked back, in a strict academic sense, from democratic socialism, but it seems a bit overstated and somewhat pedantic to claim. I hope to never see a marginal tax of 60%, nor a sales tax of 25%.

It's depressing how many Americans think our immigration policies are strict and terrible, yet refuse to compare how accommodating we really are compared to the policies of other countries, including Australia and the Nordic countries they finger bang themselves over all the time.

I speak swedish fluently and travel there often. Wouldn't mind living there for a few years.

Texas is a better place to live for most people most of the time.

If you ever do go the one thing you have to do is visit the Vasa ship museum in Stockholm.

Been there and loved it. Would never want to live there under socialism. We live far better than they do with a lot more disposable income in much bigger houses.

**** socialism.

They have a population equal to 3% of the United States...

Please feel free to move there though. Take AOC, Bernie, and the other socialists with you. I'm sure you all will be happier if you do. We'll see if a nation growing into the 100's of millions can maintain the same level of success once you've all moved there. I'm sure corruption won't be too much of an issue at those levels. It's just the practical lifestyle isn't it, giving all of your income to the government. Who could complain?

By the way, I love how the guy openly admits they tax the poor to generate revenue. Lol could you imagine that here? We'd have bloodshed in the streets in no time. You think the BLM and Anfifa types of this country will be okay with that?!? LOL

So you're for masking, I presume. Sweden is not for masking.

Btw, all Sweden did was hurt the cause of the middle class commoner and gave the upper class more power.

The only thing left of the vikings among the various scandinavian countries, imho, is that they (a) still love to party, and (b) look down on 'others' (meaning the rest of the world).

Independent of the ethical issues of socialism, the population of ALL the Baltic states combined is only about 27M: Sweden 10.4M + Finland 5.5M + Norway 5.4M + Denmark 5.8M. For comparison, the NYC metro area has 20M people, so it alone is twice the size of the largest Baltic country.

They've got their system and they seem to be happy with it, but it's a freaking joke to think that we could scale it up to a country the size of ours (330M, or 30-60x the size of theirs) without exponential increases in waste and inefficiency, and significant decreases in overall quality.

The Swedes were the least Viking anyway. But everyone forgets Sweden was a feared military power for about 75 years that ended shortly before Napoleon.

I don't get how low income earners survive on this. You can say that doesn't qualify as democratic socialism, but to me that's semantics. It's a wellfare state that's significantly more extreme than here.

It is a good point on higher ed. The tuition may be free but that isn't the only cost and when tuition is free you lose information about which universities and which degrees are most valuable. That's the biggest problem the left doesn't comprehend. The true power of a free market economy is information. Information about what is valuable.

Consider alcohol. The Swedes require all sales to go through the state (Systembolaget). They have high prices due to state tax and the amount any individual can buy is capped. Not that the average Swede could afford much.

Many aspects of Swedish life are decided for the Swede.

I'd also add that I find it interesting Sweden is seen as so stable. Over the span of 50 years they flipped from the most capitalist country to highly socialized and then to some weird pro business wellfare state. Keep in mind all that happened with no real changes in demographics. Basically the same homogenous group of people flip their sentiments that easily and their government appears to have no safeguards against those whims. If I'm a business I'm very wary of when those winds change direction again when making a long term commitment to move there.

Well I think the economist's point is well taken, they are free trade with large government programs, DSA do not believe in free trade. Relatively higher taxes doesn't equal socialism.

Literally from the DSA website:

Quote:

In the short term we can't eliminate private corporations, but we can bring them under greater democratic control.

Quote:

Although a long-term goal of socialism is to eliminate all but the most enjoyable kinds of labor, we recognize that unappealing jobs will long remain. These tasks would be spread among as many people as possible rather than distributed on the basis of class, race, ethnicity, or gender, as they are under capitalism. And this undesirable work should be among the best, not the least, rewarded work within the economy. For now, the burden should be placed on the employer to make work desirable by raising wages, offering benefits and improving the work environment. In short, we believe that a combination of social, economic, and moral incentives will motivate people to work.

I think corruption scales up quicker the larger the group. You don't get twice the corruption when the population doubles, you get more.

The larger the group the easier it is to steal.

Wake up. Actually Add up your taxes. The last time i did i was at 63%

Look around. Before the socialist sucker play was inflicted on this country 1% of gdp and of the population worked for or was dependent on government. That is why we became a great country.

Now 25% of employment is government, not even counting contractors, and over 50% are dependents in some significant way

Government interferes with EVERYTHING. It is already a commie ****hole.

A little history, our ancestors, who had brains and balls we totally lack, went to war over king george taxing us less than 20% of what dc taxes us now.

There were no income taxes, no corporate taxes, and no payroll taxes. Instead, the American Colonies were taxed by tariffs and excise taxes. This means taxes primarily existed on imports of goods and services to the colonies, as well as on the sale of particular products.

In all, the average tariff worked out to about 10 percent of the value of imports.

Midway through the 18th century, the British Parliament began imposing excise taxes that are notorious to this day. In 1764, Parliament passed the Sugar Act, imposing a tax of one pence per gallon on molasses imports, equivalent to more than $2 a gallon today. Just a few years later, the Townshend Acts started making their way through the British government, one of which imposed a tax on tea of four pence per pound ($8 today). Opposition to these taxes culminated in the famous Boston Tea Party.

Imagine risking your life, everything you love and own, and killing people, over your state sales tax going up to 12%, when there were no other taxes of any kind.

Our ancestors knew you cant run a society on government.

That is what ******* we are now.

I guess you missed the whole without representation half of the revolution?

It's not like the American revolution happened and then the US never levied taxes until now.
