You're taking the manufactured hysteria from an obvious hit piece seriously. Were you actually at South Padre watching the launch? The explosion was about 50 km away. Are there pictures of these broken windows? Something tells me there wouldn't be as many "broken windows" if Elon hadn't bought Twitter.
No, I don't care what CNN or MSNBC said this time

No dust, no broken windows, no complaints, in Port Isabel.

"In reality, following the test flight and explosion, people in Port Isabel reported broken windows in their businesses, shaking windows at their homes, and dust and particulate matter that coated their homes, schools and land unexpectedly, according to Cortez."

As there should. At this point the government should put a halt to any further launch attempts until all of these issues from the damage kicked up from the launch pad to all other damage with windows shaking until they broke.

That all needs to be guaranteed to never again before permission for the next launch attempt is granted. If it takes a few years to work everything out, then so be it. Or find another location to launch that wouldn't damage the surroundings.

How progressive of you. Pretty sad you people are so hellbent on stopping scientific progress all because of hurt feelings

yeah, didn't think so. CNBC hasn't exactly shown themselves to be unbiased, although Tim Dodd, who was live streaming from Port Isabel did show some dust, it didn't look like a sandstorm. And the explosion event was more of a "Oh did you hear that?" event that they were able to hear with nothing even audible on the stream, no windows shaking or anything.

Since SpaceX will have to have a reusable Stage Zero, there will obviously be changes to prevent the rocket from excavating the launch site each time.

I find that quite hard to believe. While I'm sure the launch rattled some windows, as they do anywhere around launch sites, there was no reentry which causes the sonic booms, which would seem to be the only way windows would be broken. Sounds like perhaps some ambulance chasers with a pocket full of rocks might be involved, if there are even truly any broken windows.

I'm still surprised they didn't anticipate the amount of damage that sucker did to the ground. Kinda crazy. And yet it still got off the ground got past max Q and got to an altitude of 38-39 km. On the first attempt. That's all a huge accomplishment. I hope they can turn it around quickly, but safely.

I'm still amazed how long Starship tumbled. For it to stay intact, as well as nobody pushing the big red button.

Best I've heard is that it is supposed to start flipping so they didn't really have any reason to terminate until it started to structurally fail. But that sucker was failing for 10x longer than most flights ever get to. Makes me wonder if other rockets could handle that kind of stress... I'm guessing not.

Reminds me of a consistent historical fact. Every rural location where an Air Force base or civilian airport has ever been built is very quickly surrounded by commercial businesses and housing areas. Those who own the businesses and houses then consistently complain about the noise pollution by the airplanes and accident hazards near the airport. Seriously stupid people!

Hey, we could colonize Mars or the moon. We could do things never thought achievable.

Well, we could have but for some dust and shaky windows.

Yes, SpaceX is going to have to do the following:
  • debris cleanup and recovery
  • root cause analysis
  • environmental post-assessment
  • share launch data versus simulated expectations with the FAA

The FAA, EPA, and NTSB are all likely involved already. SpaceX will have to appease them before they can launch again.

As part of that application for the next launch license, you will likely see publicly-available responses to inquiries from government orgs to ensure the pad won't asplode this time.

...and literally all of the above would've still been required even if the launch had met all objectives. The FAA and SpaceX have almost daily meetings about this stuff already, this isn't anything new.

I have only read about 1 legit broken window and I believe it was in SPI at a business. The guy said it would cost about $300 to replace.

And that was certainly from the launch, not the flight termination explosion.

And this manufactured hysteria about the coating of sand grime is dumb too.

We got a coat of wet sand on our car as we drove away like 5 minutes after the FTS (the sand was from the massive bloom of launch dust) and it magically blew away on it's own after it dried off on our windshield.

The whole process was maybe a minute. It was there and then it was gone. And it wasn't so thick that I couldn't see fine.

So yes, headline news: SAND FALLS FROM THE SKY NEAR THE BEACH.

It's dumb.

And BTW - SpaceX will mitigate that with the water cooled steel pad for the next launch. And if that isn't sufficient they will try something else.

Scott Manley did a short video on it and said it took about 50 seconds from the time they hit the button and blew holes in it for it to actually break up and explode.

Little holes, huge tanks. We all thought the explosive charge would immediately blow it up but that's not how their system works.

Look at Page 5, there was already an estimation of damage claims per 100 or 1000 households depending on the sound exposure levels. Damage claims occur near every airport and construction site in the US due to noise and/or vibrations

This was a bit of a hit piece, talking about the van being destroyed but not mentioning that it was right next to the pad in a restricted area for photographers remote cameras.

And also giving plenty of coverage to a scared older person that didn't like their mother's house shaking.

Quote:

In Port Isabel, a city about six miles northwest where at least one window shattered, residents were alarmed.

"It was truly terrifying," said Sharon Almaguer, who, at the time of the launch, was at home with her 80-year-old mother. During previous launches, Ms. Almaguer said she had experienced some shaking inside the brick house, but "this was on a completely different level."

Quote:

Ms. Almaguer, the Port Isabel resident, said that while Elon Musk's venture had brought jobs to an economically distressed region, the brown muck covering her city was a reminder of the environmental downsides and a sign that things had gotten out of hand.

"The locals here are just being sacrificed," she said.

"He just wanted to get this thing up in the air," Ms. Almaguer said of Mr. Musk. "Everybody else sort of be damned."

But I digress. Here's the quote from the guy with the broken window.

Quote:

A window shattered at a fitness gym, its owner, Luis Alanis, said. Mr. Alanis, who was at home at the time of the launch, said he felt "rumbling, kind of like a mini earthquake." He estimated that the window would cost about $300 to fix.
