Oil platforms won't be stable being hit with millions of pounds of thrust.

I work a drill ship in GOM that can handle 3 million pounds of casing

33 Raptor engines is 16.8 million pounds of thrust. Not that it can't be done, but it's probably a lot more expensive and complex to do it on a floating platform.

They need to get someone to cut up all that stuff and sell it on eBay. I bet there would be a ton of people who would pay for chunks of concrete from the first launch.

The wall at the end of the draworks looks like it was perforated by an A10. You can see where the shrapnel that penetrated the end wall dented the other surfaces from the inside out, and the in last picture of it you can see all the concrete stacked up on the INSIDE of the draworks.

I think that lends credence to the damaged by flying concrete theory!

Those engines operate up to 350 bar chamber pressure as compared to 75 bar on the F1 engines on Saturn V. I'm pretty sure the engine outs that were observed were more like engine meltdowns. In either case, no more nozzles.

What a great shot by Tim Dodd!

It's a moot point since the two drill ships have been sold, but you'd most likely launch over the moon pool.

It's a hole in the middle of the vessel that's open to the ocean.

And the ocean would be vaporized and pushed outward. Did you not see what it did to steel reinforced concrete? It left what looks like a 40 ft deep crater.

Which is why it would never be done from a floating platform. Not even worth discussing.

LOL.

In all seriousness, stage 0 was not entirely a failure, after all. The fueling, quick disconnects, and some of the shielding did well.

Recognizing they were wrong about the concrete holding up for one launch (absent a water deluge, with plans to go to steel plating), that did some damage to tanks etc. but I think some of the panic in the commentariat is a bit overblown. They've come a long way, over the past 20 years!

In this era, any new rocket must be reusable. Otherwise it's doomed to failure before it's ever launched.

Love the pictured article. Super cool.

So Elon was only 5 years late on his first Falcon timeline?

EDIT: I saw Elon say something like 'we take the impossible and make it late'

Saw the launch right before heading to Moab Thursday morning, which was fitting considering the Mars vibes out there. Great to see how damage tolerant the system is, from the pad to engines to everything else.

For those saying this isn't a success, or a waste of resources and time, don't know much about engineering, especially modern engineering.

Analysis is worthless without real world data to close the feedback loop and update assumptions, constants, formulas, and everything else that goes into hand calcs, finite element models and simulations.

This includes stress, modal / vibe, thermal, fluid dynamics, avionics / controls, and fault tolerance. Even without digital data (which I'm sure they have terabytes of), the visual data allows analysts to update their inputs to obtain outputs that represent the real world.

Right now 1000's of SpaceX analysts and software engineers are updating models and lines of code with the latest data, which will help them better predict the next launch, and even predict failures on the latest tech builds being flown.

That's the value of testing and failing early. It's not so much to see what works in the real world. It's to update 1000's of models and simulations. Even if this didn't leave the pad, there's millions in savings for the next flight because of updates to analysis models.

Haha, good point. They do work 80hr weeks so cut that number in half. 10% of your workforce as analysts and software engineers seems accurate though. We have 250 at Intuitive Machines, and there are at least 25 doing sims if not more.

I am curious how many people are working at SpaceX on Starship and Super Heavy, and what that breakdown looks like from a discipline standpoint.

I guess 1000 X $100K average salary is a bit much per year for one program...

While not necessarily relevant I figured I'd share some shots I have from when firefly alpha was terminated in Sept 21. It started to tilt as well but never made an entire rotation from what I recall. Firefly used a legacy FTS that is used on MMIII launches that is controlled by the ROPS. I believe SpaceX designed their own system.
