Most of the super wealthy are libs. I say pass the damn wealth tax, as long as foundations and trusts are not exempt. I'm growing tired of defending these guys wealth that are spending money with super pacs to fight guys like me.

Bring it on

If Liberals will appeal to their fellow Democrats, we should be able to resolve this by having these guys distribute half their wealth to either the government... or the poor:

1. Bezos ($112B)
2. Gates ($90B)
3. Buffett ($84B)
4. Zuckerberg ($71B)
8. Bloomberg ($50B)
9. Larry Page ($48.8 - Alphabet)
10. Sergey Brin $47.8B - Alphabet

But they won't.

That's over $250B.

Problem solved.

The wealth tax that will eventually be passed will apply to both liberals and conservatives, so I don't really see your point.

There's not going to be a wealth tax. There would have to be an amendment...

There actually are quite a few progressives out there. in Texas, in the USA, and across the globe. What is rare are the right wing conservative extremists which are very common in the TexAgs echo chamber but are becoming increasingly rare across the globe.

I used to be conservative until I figured out how the real world operates, with the deck always stacked in favor of the elite, and nobody really giving a damn about the plight of the middle class. Corporations continuous drive for maximizing profits while giving their employees the shaft has enlightened me over the years.

The problem is you wanna swing too far the other way. Taking all the $$ away from the "elite" will penalize everyone who works for them by taking jobs away as companies are forced to shut down for lack of profit/investments.

And how does taking the money away from the rich to give to the government/poor help the middle class?

Frequency of existence doesn't change the fact that progressives are economically ignorant, naive, and destroy everything they touch. It proves that the only thing you all are good at is spreading your toxic propaganda via educators and media members who almost exclusively graduated university with liberal arts degrees. None of the policies you seek make any sense economically, mathematically, or psychologically. Try to think for yourself for once instead of just regurgitating liberal propaganda. If you actually apply logic to the issues, it will be impossible to side with the progressive agenda. Even though you're too naive to realize it, the policies you vote for WILL have devastating consequences for you and your family!

so what does taxing the rich achieve? what is the end game? every 5 or 10 years a tax is levied against the top X percent of income earners or top X percent of wealth holders? so what? will it effectively deter a behavior you deteat? there is only one ultimate outcome, and that is government control of wealth, assets and people. then what happens, the ultra successful (which you wanted to punish in the first place) will migrate to positions of power in government. if you thought there was corruption and greed before, just wait until those who successfully played the game and maybe bent the rules are now in position to write the rules and now have a monopoly with no competition. you only managed to create a single beast who holds his own leash vs one that had society and competition hold it for him.

What a crock of s***. I came from a lower middle class family and somehow managed to get a college degree and move myself up through middle class and beyond. Keep feeding that line to your family and friends so they can always blame someone else but themselves. I am so tired of voters like yourself that think that everyone is against you and you can't make yourself and situation better without heavy government interference. You are an embarrassment as to what America was founded on what can be accomplished if you work hard.

The "stacking of the deck" is somewhat true but that stacking is caused by government and the elite. So if that's driving you you must be a liberaltarian or a conservative but no way in hell can you be a liberal.

Libs act like billionaires have all of their wealth in cash stuffed under a bunch of mattresses. Their wealth is a major reason our economy does so well bc it is used to build companies, create jobs, create new tech, etc. If libs has it their way and taxed 70% of their wealth (which apparently represents 60% of everyone's worth) they would have to sell so much stock that markets would plummet and regular people's retirement funds who also own that stock would be decimated, they would have to sell corporate assets to raise cash thus shrinikkng companies and putting people out of jobs, etc. innovation would dry up. The billionaires' livelihoods benefit everyone. Nothing exists in a vacuum.

Yep...

Guys like Bezos are rich as **** because they own tons of stock in their companies. What's he supposed to do? Liquidate half his stock? Let me wait a day or 2 and then I'll buy 100,000 shares for $8.47 and wait for it to go back up.

Oh yeah, the government got 70% of $33,247, which was all his stock was worth after it crashed...

I think the real issue is here is the fact that socialists are envious of more successful people and their acquired wealth. They don't want to generate their own wealth so they must steal from others.

The richest people in 1980 actually ended up poorer, on average, in 2014. Like the top 20%, the top 1% in 1980 were also poorer on average 34 years later in 2014. The gloomiest picture of the American economy is not accurate. The rich don't get all the gains. The poor and middle class are not stagnating.

I dont mean this as harsh as it is going to sound, but this is a loser mentality.

I said it earlier, but it bears repeating: if you dont like your situation do something about it. Start a business, go sell stuff, be a damn meat-eater; quit blaming others for your inaction.

There is no deep conspiracy or wealthy boogeyman that keeps you poor; your loser mentality does that.

So fix it (the attitude) and be happy.

Real translation = I lost a great job because I couldn't handle the stress and work ethic required. I've been relegated to lower paying gigs since (HS teaching would be my guess). I'm pissed off that I have an education and can't seem to make it happen like so many others I see around me. My solution is to pull others down to my level since I can't rise to theirs.

Hammer meet nail...this very simple concept completely escapes the simple mind's of liberals. This lack of understanding of basic economic principles allows Marxism to spread at terrifying rates. Shanked's response is a perfect example of the naivety of liberal economic principals.

So Shanked, please answer: How is the investment of billionaires's wealth not tied to the fabric of this nation's economic success? Furthermore, do you think that reducing the wealth of top earner will have no effect on business capital, job availability, and the retirement accounts of countless middle class workers?
