Pretty clear that Smollett is a dyed in the wool activist which in and of itself is not a problem but it also gives him a strong motive for lying about a lynching incident to draw attention to his cause. Its also been shown by his tweets and social history that he viscerally hates Trump which again is his right but when combined with his story about "MAGA country" makes it more than a little skeptical.
Since the police are not going to look into the "victim" because he was the "victim", unless someone talks, this is going to remain an "open case" with every Trump supporter guilty.

If their narrative were truly correct, we'd be seeing a lot more credible stories emanating from Republican strongholds. By and large, we're not seeing that.
But they'll look at YOU funny if you don't take the media's "ZOMG RACISM IS RAMPANT RT NOW!" narrative at face value.

Well it's an example where they are robbed - slurs seem like an add-on to that.
As I said I think most of the motivations were robberies this one is no exception.
And to the above reference to why so resistant - I'm not I just haven't seen evidence that there is something more than robberies for the most part.
I also think victims are prone to embellish their victimhood- especially within their community (regardless of race, creed, color, persuasion, etc.) and that leads to some belief that the community is being targeted for some reason other than just robberies. People talk and stories get embellished and suddenly you have a hate crime.
Again I go back to 2008 to 2015 there are many many many of the same stories - only they were not labelled hate crimes then or attacks on gays.

In the article you started with it mentioned they were not always robbed of their wallets but did also mention some were robbed of their phones. I mean some people specifically want to steal phones - easier to sell for more cash than most people carry. It only specifically mentions 2 cases that were not robberies (of anything).
So I don't know about "many" just like your "more than 30" that seems an embellishment - which I get. As a result of the community talking about it, it becomes more evil and sinister if it is all hate crimes and not robberies. I'm not sure the facts support that.
