It is still there and doing a brisk business. B-R and Ace Hardware are the survivors in the area, Randalls and the MAC too.

BR is still pretty good but there isn't much ice cream I don't like . This Dunkin is just horrible.
When we moved to the Norf Side of Houston we went to the Dunkin in the neighborhood...once. We all thought it was terrible. No fresh or hot donuts to be found. We apologized to Shipley's for straying.

There is one every block in New England because they don't know any better.

RIP the old James' Coney Island. And I don't mean the lame-ass JCI grill. The original James' right off of Memorial Drive. That location had the best ham and American on rye, with mustard and pickles. One of the few things that could over-ride buying an original coney.

Bad news: cancel culture is stupid, and we need to get rid of it. Hopefully, if the right starts using it effectively with more and more companies, the whole strategy will just go away. I'm glad that comics are generally spending a good chunk of their bit making fun of cancel culture.

Boycott does not equal cancel culture. A boycott is passive. Cancel culture is aggressive.

One says "I don't agree with you". The other says "I will destroy your life".

The one on 290 is still good. Bellaire isnt.

Can't believe they closed the one at Beltway/I-10 and Bering/Westheimer.

Yeah, I can see the difference. Agree that the latter is way worse.

I still think there can be silly boycotts. I think that, for example, Tom Cruise is a complete weirdo. But, he generally keeps his weirdo stuff to himself.

Contrast that with DeCrapio, Ruffeloes and LeeBron, who I can't stand.

I remember going to the original JCI Town & Country when it was close to Memorial Drive back when I was in high school. The building near City Centre where it moved years ago is completely gone now.

The location at Shepherd & Richmond closed a few years ago and is now a BunB Trill Burgers (not that there's anything wrong with that).

And the Delaware Punch is now Coney Punch.

I'm really not trying to turn this into a JCI thread, but I remember my first trip to the original downtown location on Wheeler Street. My older brother took me there in about '66, before he was drafted. I was lost as a new-born puppy looking at the menu. If you ever saw a picture of the original menu at one of the other locations, it doesn't do it justice with how big it was. My brother helped me get my order, and from then on, any time I went downtown with my friends to catch a movie at the Lowes or the Metropolitan theaters, we'd stop in and get hot dogs for lunch at James'. Coincidentally, one of our group loved to go to Walgreens and get a couple of glazed doughnuts after the movie, so it ties into Duncan as well.
There were so many locations that closed through the years; Post Oak in the Galleria area, Sharpstown, the Memorial City location, Westheimer, Shepard and the last one near us in Meadows Place. I know the quality was much less than it used to be, but I still liked to stop in and get an original coney and a bowl of chili every now and then. I can't justify driving up to 290 or Meyerland to get a hot dog.

Back to funny political memes.

We have a new one out by us that is awful. They don't make any donuts in-house at this Dunkin / Baskin Robins combo. Truly awful; they are two day old gas station donuts at best
I grew up with a Baskin-Robbins at the edge of my neighborhood off Memorial Drive in West Houston, and we used to ride our bikes up there as kids and as a family all the time. I haven't been to one of those since I moved out of Houston, but I still always liked them. I'm not a huge ice cream person though.

Exactly. A liberal business owner in Boise (where I live now) can post all of their nonsense everywhere in their business, and they will probably survive but not thrive. A conservative business owner (me) in SF, if it ever got out, wouldve been completely destroyed in literally every facet of my life. My business? Gone. My home? Vandalized. My commercial property? Burned to the ground. My dog? Well...they touch my dog and they'd get my full wrath...

They could have my liberal ex-girlfriend though.

They're very different approaches to handling people you disagree with. One side doesn't like them, but just goes somewhere else. The other thinks you deserve to be literally destroyed, and in some cases, dead. I wish this were an exaggeration, but that's the world we have to live in nowadays. The main lesson learned is live and work somewhere where people around you don't want to do everything in their power to destroy your life. Or just keep all your opinions a secret. I made a killing in SF, and it turned me into a multimillionaire almost overnight, but as stupid as I might be at times, I was damned careful about what I said in my business and to my employees, as well as in public around where I lived.

James Coney between memorial and I 10 on what used to be West belt but is now the beltway, is the one I went to growing up as well. The 'newer' location that was built about 30 years ago is still in that same area but in a different building across from the Escalante now but they closed down a few years ago.

There was also one at Clay Road and the beltway. Every time I go back to Houston, I stop and get some on the way out and now I've had to relegate to the 290 one. They keep closing them.
