Quality diminished almost immediately after being bought out. Not nearly as good as it used to be when Ags owned it.

Yeah, I think the original was in Santa Barbara. They wanted to expand and a demographics sesrch led them to CS in the early 90s. The partners split at some point and one guy kept the original one and the other one grew the chain in Texas before he sold them to Tavistock. I think PE has since bought them after they got out over their skis with expansion.

I looked it up and it started in Santa Barbara near UCSB in 1987. Northgate was first expansion on January 13, 1991.

Last couple of visits to Freebird's have been few and far between and the burritos were not any good

This is all correct. And yes, the PE firm started pushing the prices up and the cost of the ingredients down, and the product is a shell of what it used to be now.


I looked many years back while in SB and I believe the original closed a long time ago.

When the partners split, the guy that moved to College Station did great. Santa Barbara, not so much.

A very prolonged lawsuit about ownership of trademarks, etc., kept Freebirds from expanding any further than Northgate for a long time.
