exas State University is hoping to hire two Math Education professors with a demonstrated and longstanding commitment to "social justice."

According to the job postings on Inside Higher Ed, the two new professors must not only share TSU's commitment to "education equity" and "social justice," but should preferably also have a demonstrated record of engagement or academic research on the issue.
Quote:

The openings are for both tenured or tenure-track positions at the "ranks of Assistant Professor, Associate Professor, or Professor," with different levels of social-justice expertise preferred at each level.
Quote:

Among the preferred qualifications for the Assistant Professor rank is a "demonstrated knowledge and engagement" with issues including "social justice, equity, access, and multilingual learning," while the Associate and Full Professor ranks prefer "evidence of research and practices" on such topics.
Those qualifications definitely make you a better math prof.
Quote:

"We are especially interested in applicants whose scholarly interests and work include attention to the concerns of race, ethnicity, multilingualism, immigrant, social class, gender, and diversity, broadly defined," the advertisement notes, adding that professors "from historically underrepresented groups are strongly encouraged to apply
A.K.A, White Males need not apply
Quote:

While the job application specifies that TSU is a "Hispanic Serving Institution," it is unclear how exactly a background in social justice is expected to benefit the department, since it currently offers no social justice programming or classes.

They may as well have said "We want subpar professors who are more concerned with issues other than teaching or studying mathematics to teach our students."

We're already there for 3/4 of the degrees in existence. College is literally for anything outside of STEM and perhaps finance and ag. The rest of the degrees are nothing more than a 4/5 year party that will saddle you with an $80,000 loan that you have little chance of paying back.

Why in the world would a math professor worth their weight waste time researching BS like that?
CNN is an enemy of the state and should be treated as such.

Oh yeah, I forgot. Of course math is racist, it is based upon facts and as we all know, facts are racist.

I guess they 're looking for someone whose area of expertise is calculus who has written a scholarly article on the evils of differentiation and the benefits of integration.

"Wanted: Math professors (mathematics experience not required)."

More evidence, as if any is needed, of the PC/SJW movement having ruined higher education.

Wow, thats nuts.

I bet the performance objective will state there needs to be an even distribution of grades across all races and genders in the name of equity. Then we'll deduct 10% from all the white males and spread it around, to account for their white privilege

Muslim or Indian professor for sure.

No way an American born minority or the unheard of gay or lesbian white math professor exists.

I pulled up the advertisement from TX State. Surprise, surprise the position isn't actually even in the Math department. The position is in the dreaded "elementary education" area of the "re-education department".

There actually are plenty of white gay/lesbian STEM profs. Granted, not as many as you'd find in Psychology or Speech Communications or Theater arts, but just because the field is male dominated doesn't mean it's some "real manly men" club that shuns Others.

Why do we need to teach college kids K-8 math, unless they were allowed to get into college without the education supposedly required to enroll? It then just becomes extended high school, but everyone feels better because the kid is in college. But they will then either be pushed through to graduation without marketable skills or flunk out, which will likely be attributed to some form of discrimination, such as racist math.

But somehow this is all in the best interest of the kid, right?

Devil's advocate, but maybe it's not about teaching college kids K-8 math, but teaching college kids HOW to teach K-8 math, especially kids on the margin.

That's all I've got...very strange job posting.

If that's the reason for the job postings, then I have misunderstood. I agree that there needs to be well-educated folks to teach elementary math. The social aspect of the requirements makes me leary however.

I'm in a M.Ed. program right now. Admittedly it's though a Jesuit university in blue Denver, so the social piece is pushed without an ounce of shame.

My Foundations of Education course has been an eye opener. I can admit that I've been raised in a majority bubble (white, male, straight, conservative, Christian), but it quite literally makes my head hurt on a weekly basis how much social justice is the overarching theme of eduction these days.

I'm willing to expand my exposure to minority groups, but the strong undercurrent of "challenge the status quo" is pervasive and troubling.
